No iMac Internet connection unless VPN is on

This problem started about a week ago. I'm on an iMac 2021 running macOS 26.0.1. I use PIA VPN v3.6.1.

With the VPN on I can access the Internet. With the VPN off, my browser or application cannot connect to the internet.

This is a recent problem. My other devices connected to the same W-Fi router can connect to the internet with the VPN on or off. This is an issue with the iMac.

The iMac can access the internet with the VPN connected but no internet connection when the VPN is off. I remember now that this problem started after I installed the new Tahoe OS. Thanks.

Your VPN installed files in your Launch Folders or Extensions that is preventing the internet connection when it is not being used. This alters the network configuration on startup. Use the Uninstaller to remove the VPN and compare your results.

You can view the files that have been installed by using EtreCheck. It is a free tool that displays the location and files that run on startup and the report contains no personal information if post it here to help identify those files.

Some VPNs will alter your Mac's network settings, which can be many, so you will need to investigate that on your own. Creating a new network "location" may prove to be a quick fix: Use network locations on Mac - Apple Support

Generally speaking it is insufficient to disable or "turn off" a VPN. It has to be uninstalled in accordance with its instructions — assuming you can find them, and that they work, which tends to be rare.

PIA appears to be aptly named.

In case you missed it: Don't use VPN services. Just don't.
