How to convert MP3 to OGG for better audio quality?

Hi everyone,

I've got a bunch of MP3 files, and I'm wondering if it's possible to convert them to OGG to get better sound quality. I know MP3 is already a lossy format, but people mention that OGG can give better compression and sometimes better playback quality.

Has anyone here tried converting MP3 to OGG and actually noticed an improvement? I'm on iMac, but I also have a Windows 11 PC, so cross-platform options would be great too.

Thanks in advance for any tips or experiences!

When the MP3 file is your source, then any conversion is going to be (close to) the same quality or less. The converted file is not going to be better audible quality than the source. The conversion can have better compression (depending on settings), but better playback quality would require going back one more step, to the source of the primary conversion to this MP3 file.

Converting MP3 to OGG can be a good way to reduce file size or potentially improve audio quality, especially if you encode at higher bitrates. Keep in mind that since MP3 is already lossy, converting MP3 to OGG (another lossy format) won't necessarily recover lost quality, but it can sometimes result in better compression efficiency or improved playback depending on encoding settings.

Here's what you need to know:

  • OGG Vorbis is an open-source, lossy audio format that often provides better quality at similar or smaller file sizes compared to MP3.
  • The key to good conversion is to use high-quality encoding settings, preferably starting from the original source if available
