iPhone Air can't see 6 ghz band supported by router

I have a GL.iNet BE9300 Wi-Fi 7 Router, which has a 6 ghz wifi band configured and enabled, yet my iPhone Air can't see it, i.e. I can see the 2.5 ghz and 5 ghz bands as usual, but not the 6 ghz band.

Does this match anyone else's experience? Any suggestions to resolve?

Thanks.

Here’s what Apple says about the Air.

  • Apple N1 wireless networking chip
  • Wi‑Fi 7 (802.11be) with 2x2 MIMO**

**Wi‑Fi 7 available in countries and regions where supported

You can request Apple perform remote diagnostics on your dev. If the N1 chip and WiFi check out, it will indicate a call to the router’s manufacturer is in order.

> What is the make and model number of your Wi-Fi router? Do you know when it was introduced?

As mentioned in the initial post, it is a GL.iNet BE9300 Wi-Fi 7 Router, introduced just this year.

> My answer was regarding Wi-Fi, not cellular.

I had always understood "mmWave" to refer to cellular connections, but clearly I am wrong, partially or completely. I am unclear on that.

Clearly the iPhone Air doesn't support mmWave, and its support of Wifi 7 and 6 ghz wifi is still a work in progress. I think the BE9300 supports tech that Apple hasn't quite moved to support, so far at least.

So, I think my issue is an iOS/Apple issue, not a router issue. Thanks for all replies.

Generally speaking, you normally wouldn't be able to know whether your iPhone is connecting to 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz or 6 GHz if the router is set up correctly. If you want to specifically choose a band, the bands need to be configured individually, so you can see which band you want to connect to. For the iPhone to detect the 6 GHz band, the router must advertise its presence through a beacon, and for that, you should contact your ISP or router manufacturer for help with that.

Personally, I don't really care which band my phone connects to as long as the connection is stable and there is no issue doing what I need my phone to do when online.

How old is the router? IEEE 802.11be standard, which Wi-Fi 7 is based on, was published in July 2025. I’m seeing that some older routers don’t conform to that spec. There were several purposed versions and some manufacturers backed incompatible version. Have you spoken with the router manufacturer’s support team and confirmed compatibility?

So far, based on a few searches.......

The "iPhone Air" does not support the 6 GHz band for 5G connectivity.

It supports Wi-Fi 7 in the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands....but...its 5G connection is limited to sub-6 GHz, not mmWave.

Or, stated another way.......

5G: The iPhone Air's C1X modem only supports sub-6 GHz 5G, not the faster mmWave 5G, according to this YouTube video and MacRumors.

Disclaimer.....I don't have an iPhone Air here to test and confirm.
