Dowloading iOS and iPadOS 26.0.1 isn’t working properly

Hello everybody,

Yesterday my girlfriend and I had a day off, so we decided it was a good moment to upgrade our Apple devices to software version 26.

Our iPhones, iPads and MacBook Air where running on the latest version, iOS and iPadOS 18.7.1 and macOS Sequoia 15.7.1 .

My girlfriend's iPhone 16, her MacBook Air M2 and my iPad Air 3th generation upgraded properly, by WiFi / over the air (OTA).

But her iPad Air 5th generation and my iPhone 13 mini can’t download properly the software of iPadOS and iOS 26.0.1 . Because the downloading by the iPad and iPhone is extremely slow, so downloading will take hours or even a big part of the day.

And by recovery of my iPhone with Finder on her MacBook gives the notification that the resource is unavailable.

I tried many much possible solutions, partially with phone assistance from Apple Support, nothing worked:

  • Force restart of the devices.
  • Turning off of VPN and remove VPN-settings from iPhone and iPad.
  • Turning off of anti virus software on the MacBook Air.
  • Turning off of cloud-based malware filter from my service provider.
  • Reset of the modem-router.
  • I have myself an Windows laptop which i can connect with a cable instead of WiFi and i tried to recover my iPhone with this laptop by the program Apple Devices. The same notification as with the MacBook Air, the software-resource isn’t available.

Is there maybe a cloud service malfunction by Apple itself?

Can anybody help?

Thanks in advance.

Yesterday late on the evening I had an idea about another way to update the iPad at home, which I have tried this early morning (local time). And it did work! Yes!

My girlfriend’s iPad Air 5th generation is now updated from iPadOS 18.7.1 to 26.0.1 .

I’ve used the following configuration:

  • My girlfriend’s iPhone, with only 5G mobile data enabled, connected to her MacBook Air with a USB-cable.
  • On her MacBook I disabled WiFi, so the MacBook had only internet connection via her iPhone through the USB-connection (USB-tethering).
  • I connected the iPad with the MacBook with another USB-cable, and set the iPad in recovery mode. (On the iPad I had let WiFi enabled.)

And then I could this time recover and upgrade her iPad with Finder.

Maybe it was the recovery mode on the iPad, maybe it was also using USB-tethering instead of mobile hotspot what made it successful. I don’t know.

When i came home this afternoon (local time in the Netherlands) there was a malfunction of my optical fibre connection. The fiber optic box, which translates optical signals into electrical signals for the internet-modem, turned out broken.

So tomorrow morning there will come a mechanic of the provider to fix this.

Probably this will solve also my problem that we can’t download iOS and iPadOS 26.0.1 on my iPhone and my girlfriend’s iPad.

Last Saturday first I tried to download iOS 26.0.1 on my iPhone via WiFi, which didn’t work. Again downloading was extremely slow and after a while interrupted.

Second I tried via mobile data, the same problem.

This Monday first I tried again to download on my iPhone via WiFi, didn’t work.

Second via mobile data, and now it did work!

Now my iPhone is updated, at last!

But now, my girlfriend’s iPad isn’t a cellular model…

1.) So we tried to download iPadOS 26.0.1 via WiFi, didn’t work.

2.) Then via her iPhones mobile hotspot, but that way it isn’t possible to download a update (or upgrade from 18.7.1 to 26.0.1 in this case). Even not via 5G mobile network and allow more data via 5G turned on on her iPhone.

3.) A third option: Connecting her Mac with her iPhones mobile hotspot and connect her iPad with her Mac by USB, didn’t work. The same problem as earlier; Finder gives the notification the software-resource isn’t available…

4.) Connecting her iPad with her iPhone by USB. Also that didn’t work because then there is no internet connection on her iPad via USB…

The only two solutions, in my opinion, that rest for my girlfriend’s iPad are:

1.) Waiting for iPadOS 26.1, which is coming soon. (Maybe even later this day.) Maybe that will help on server side.

2.) Going to a Apple Store, only that isn’t in our region. Okay, the Netherlands is a small country, but it is still traveling a couple of hours from where we live. The only Apple Stores are in Den Hague, Amsterdam and Haarlem, all in the west of the Netherlands. So there are no Apple stores in the North, the East and the South of the Netherlands.

Does anyone has another suggestion we could try to solve this problem from home?

Dear Jeff Donald,

I had good hope your solution would be thé solution. I even did a force restart of my iPhone, a couple of minutes after the reset of network settings, just to be sure it would work. But unfortunately it didn’t help with my iPhone 13 mini... 😕

Also now the downloading was slow and a couple of times even interrupted.

I haven’t tried yet with the iPad Air 5th generation of my girlfriend, i will do later when i have time for it.

I’m quite sure the cause of this problem is in the cloud of Apple itself.

I hope Apple can fix this problem quite fast, by example by or just before the official release of 26.1 .

By the way, are you a Apple employee? Or else, are there on this community also developers or employees of Apple itself? Or is this community only/ mostly for people who have or use Apple devices?

Edit: I just read somewhere else on this community that there are no Apple employees here, unfortunately.
