Generally I have had no issue with reporting spam, except for political and one specific number. I was told by others that there is nothing that can be done about political stuff. But there is a specific phone number telling me that I need to renew something. I keep reporting it as junk but every other day I get a new message from that number. What's up with that?

When you use iMessage, you can report spam messages to Apple. Depending on your carrier and country or region, reporting spam you receive with SMS, MMS, or RCS shares this information with your carrier and its affiliates.

If you accidentally report and delete messages, you can recover them.
Reporting spam doesn’t prevent the sender from sending messages, but you can block the contact to stop receiving them.
To avoid getting incoming messages from new numbers, you can filter them. See Screen and filter messages from unknown senders, above.

Block the number. Reporting it as junk does not automatically block it.
Those reports are collected by Apple in the case of iMessages and forwarded to the cellular carriers in the case of SMS/MMS messages.
If enough complaints are received they will be flagged as spammers and either blocked or otherwise dealt with (account termination or blocking at the network level).
Thanks, I will. But, what is the purpose of report as junk if it doesn't block it, especially after repeated classification as junk?
