Urgent: Possible Security Issue After iOS 26.0.1 Update — iPhone Acting on Its Own

Hello everyone,

I recently updated my iPhone 12 Pro Max to iOS 26.0.1, and ever since, I’ve been experiencing very alarming behavior. My phone randomly opens apps and navigates through settings on its own, even when it’s just sitting on the table and not being touched.

At one point, it opened my social media apps and started scrolling automatically. Later, while on a wireless charger, it went into Settings → Personal Hotspot → Hotspot Password without any input from me. When I tried to exit, it kept returning to the same screen. The activity only stopped after I turned on Airplane Mode.

I verified that Screen Mirroring, Screen Sharing, and all background apps (Teams, Outlook, WhatsApp, etc.) were closed.

This feels extremely concerning, almost like someone is remotely controlling my device. It doesn’t seem like a simple glitch. This never happened before updating to iOS 26.0.1, and I’m genuinely worried this might be a security or privacy issue with the new update.

Has anyone else experienced something similar or found an explanation? I’d appreciate any guidance or confirmation from Apple if this is being investigated.

Thank you.

iPhone 12 Pro Max, iOS 26

What you describe is a failing Digitizer. It is responsible for touch events and built into the screen and when it fails, you will see "ghost" touches that appears like you have tapped on the screen. Your device is not being remotely controlled.

Take your device to Apple so diagnostics can be performed to determine this fault and the resolution is to have the screen replaced.

I have also seen a swelling battery that pushes against the screen cause the same problem, but not as common. I only mention that since you have an iPhone 12 and if the battery has never been replaced, you are likely overdue. You can check the Battery Health at Settings > Battery > Battery Health > Maximum Capacity, and if it is below 80%, that would need to be replaced as well.
