Low and distorted speaker sound on iPhone 17 Pro

Subject: Low and distorted speaker sound on iPhone 17 Pro

Message:

Hello,

I recently purchased an iPhone 17 Pro and I’ve noticed a consistent problem with the speaker sound.

Even when the volume is set to maximum, the overall loudness is noticeably lower than on my previous iPhone 14 Pro.

In addition, at higher volume levels, the sound sometimes becomes slightly distorted or “crackly,” especially when listening to YouTube videos or WhatsApp voice messages.

I have already tried all the suggested troubleshooting steps (cleaning the speakers, checking balance, disabling Bluetooth, resetting sound settings, restarting, and updating iOS), but the issue remains the same.

From what I’ve seen on Apple Support Communities and forums, many other users of the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max have reported the same behavior, so it seems to be a widespread issue.

Could you please confirm whether Apple is aware of this and if a software update is planned to fix it?

Thank you very much for your attention and support.

Best regards,

Martin

Hi, this is not Apple Support. Apple and Apple Support do not participate here. Everyone posting and commenting are fellow Apple users, just like you.

Millions of iPhone 17 models have been sold and some are exhibiting the behavior you describe. Not exactly widespread, but possibly a hardware and/or software issue. Apple typically does not confirm a bug until the fix is released. Your best course of action will be to rule out a hardware issue by having diagnostics performed by Apple. Make sure support ticket is opened so the issue can be tracked by Apple Support and engineering.

You need to have Apple perform diagnostics on your iPhone. It can be done in person at an Apple Retail Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can also contact Apple Support and request remote diagnostics.

I’ve seen a few people mention the same issue on the 17 Pro lately. Sometimes it’s not a hardware problem but just debris or fine dust affecting the sound output, even if it looks clean.

Try gently brushing around the speaker grills with a soft, dry toothbrush or using a small piece of sticky tape to lift any lint. A quick restart after that can also help recalibrate sound output.

If the distortion is still there, it might just need a software fix from Apple. Hopefully the next iOS update smooths it out.
