How to use iMessage to have a chat room like Messenger

My family and I would like to create a chat group via iMessage so that everyone can write and read in a thread.

So far it has not worked, and everyone has started iMessage in Messages.

As it is so far - if I send a message to 4 other people, I get a reply from all of them, but none of the others can see what the others have replied.
