How to remove MDM lock on a second-hand MacBook?

Contact the company which set it. If they intended someone outside them to have the unit, they should have done this before sending it out; otherwise, it's their property, not yours.

Apple won't remove someone else's MDM lock.

Only the original organization can remove the MDM lock. Ask the seller to get it released through Apple Business Manager if they can’t, return the device.

There are some basics in buying or selling a used mac... this was obviously not done by the previous owner

If you could remove the "MDM lock" that would be a huge security issue. The company activated the lock to prevent changes to their computer. Perhaps you purchased a stolen computer.

If what Niel advises can’t be achieved then see if you can get your money back (probably unlikely). Prepare yourself to the fact that you’ve been ripped off and you’ve lost your money.
