I’m trying to post a reply to a response to a recent question. Three times now I get a response that I can’t post right now but to try back in a few minutes. I did and did and did try again. I happened to catch a message that I had timed out and to log back it. Timed out in five or so seconds? Okay so I logged back in again and again and immediately tried to post my response. Still it wants me to log in again. What am I missing here?

How recent? Can you post a link to the post you tried to answer?
Posts get locked for age or inactivity. Our Hosts have not revealed the exact time before a post is declared inactive; observation suggests it is in the range of 90 days±. Once locked, posts can no longer be answered.
You may also encountered bugs in this massive forum setting that required bespoke software to manage the mass of users.
Time-outs you mention happen, but I have not had any today. I have however had stalls.

used to show at the top of a locked thread. Now, for some reason, it shows at the bottom. 🤷🏻
Did you find the question you wanted to answer using a search engine? That too often leads people to locked threads.
