latest update rendered the phone almost useless. It looks like a cheap iPhone copy, but worse, it is very hard to see anything and the font is barely readable and everything is blurred like Vaseline on the screen. I tried to set more contrast and use Toned setting but I cannot find any disable switch.

You can't completely turn off the "Liquid Glass" effect, but you can significantly reduce it by going to Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size and enabling Reduce Transparency. For the lock screen clock, press and hold on the Lock Screen, tap "Customize," then tap the clock and change the style from "Glass" to "Solid".
You can also try: Settings > Display & Brightness > Liquid Glass > Tinted

On lock screen, tap screen to get Customize at the bottom of the screen. Select Customize, and an Add Widgets link pops up. Select that, and you should be able to go from there to get the solid lettering.

The post you replied to refers to the Clock on the Lock Screen and the location for that is noted in the previous User Tip:
Lock Screen > Customize > Tap the clock > Choose either Glass or Solid and Choose whatever color you'd like the clock numbers to be, including a slider to determine the amount of opacity > Tap Done when you are satisfied.

iOS 26.x.x and Liquid Glass is simply the design Apple has chosen to go with, for now. The iPhone User Interface has had several major redesigns in its near 20 year history. The last major redesign was iOS 7, back in 2014.
Apple’s user base is literally over 1.5 billion users. Making a single user interface perfectly compatible for every user is literally impossible. Apple will make changes (or not make changes) based partially on the feedback they receive through their official channel, linked below and good luck.
The liquid glass look is awful, it looks like tacky stickers stuck to the screen. I tried switching from Transparent to Tinted in the Display & Brightness setting but it makes no difference. Also there appears to be no way to make the digital clock on the Lock Screen solid. I tried the long press on the home screen then customise, but again no way to alter the readability. It's hard for me to read as is.

I live in New Mexico...High altitude with super bright sunshine. It's difficult to see/use when in my phone holster...especially typing (record) locations.
