File Vault Error

Hi,

Once again, I'm going to attempt to WIN THE FILE VAULT BATTLE. Throughout the two years I've had File Vault enabled, I have attempted to Turn Off! Every attempt has been unsuccessful and every-time I have given up.

But those times I could never manage to rid enough files, etc to regain disk space on my mac. But, this time I have managed due to massive deleting of files, images, etc. And backing up and moving some programs to my Lacie external drive.

Anyway, here is my current disk space availability on my Mac HD:
Capacity: 232.57 GB
Available: 211.56 GB
Used: 21 GB on disk

My Home Folder which is what the File Vault encrypts has the following:
4.6 GB

Thought this would be enough to turn off File Vault. Apparently not! I no longer have iphoto, large images, etc. My home folder is minimal except iweb and a few low disk things. Really, 4.6 GB seems small in the home folder.

I do notice one promising attribute in this battle. First time ever, managed to get the turning off process (decrypting) started when it asked for my password. Password worked and albeit previous attempts did not receive the ever persistent error message: The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items. Or, it would say not enough space.

Now this time, upon what I thought was going to begin the process, instead of errors mentioned above, I receive the following: An error occurred during encryption (An error occurred during copying). File Vault will be turned on for this home folder and the home folder will still be encrypted.

Hmmm, what is going on? What is this mysterious error? Do I still need to deal with disk space?

Help most appreciative.

P.S. This File Vault battle is ridiculous!!! If I can ever get it turned off, I will never ever use it again. Take note anyone considering.

Actually, I just decided to double click on the sparseimage and received this:
Warning - The following disk images failed to mount. Reason: permission denied.

So, I guess I should head back into my file vault users account and then do the terminal stuff? Or, can I just do that in my current 2nd users account where I am at now where I finally was able to bring up the sparseimage?

Sorry just don't want to get to far ahead of things here.

So you gotta change the permissions.

are you on am admin account?

I changed mine to read / write.

You can skip this for now. You do not have to deal with hidden files. You would do it on the second account if for some reason you cannot find the sparse image.

Hi RC,
thanks for quick response! Yes, I did click on the lock, but nothing changed. So do I open with disk image mounter first which is on the Get Info?

Are you on an admin account?
Was the lock closed?
Did it ask for your password?
The lock should change to open. See my image.

......
If get info doesn't work, you need a more serious tool, BatChmod:
I am using BatChmod 1.51 on Mac OS 10.4.11

Download BatChmod 1.51
Works on 10.5 and 10.6

Download BatChmod 1.37
(for previous system versions as 1.5 has not been tested on any other system, though may work.)

Hi Rick,

OK. Finally double-clicked on the sparseimage>password>mounted it onto the desktop. Then I did a DiskUtility Reapir. Repair was successful!!! Then I quit DiskUtility followed by unmounting the sparseimage disk. Note I am still in the 2nd users account while doing all this.

Now. Reading the Apple Verify & Repair document it says at this stage #25. to Get Info on the .sparseimage disk file again and change the owner back to the original account name. Note: If this is not done, your Home may not be available when logging in as the protected account.

I'm confused! Here I am looking at the Get Info. This is what has caused so many problems. Keeping in mind the lock is unlocked while getting the sparseimage file I was using Owner: this was the 2nd users account name let's say example User 2.
So, when I go to change the Owner name back to my 1st Users account which is the File Vault account... (afterall this is the original account right?) I notice that after changing to my 1st account Owner name, that the 2nd users account name suddenly appears in that box. Then the password window appears. So which is it?

I'm scared to death that I will be unable to log into my protected account because the Owner name is not right. Which Owner are they really talking about at this end of the game?

Sorry frustrated!

Back yo the original owner, User#1.

If you cant, then just log back into this account User#2.

I notice that after changing to my 1st account Owner name, that the 2nd users account name suddenly appears in that box.

I don't think that should be happening, are you using BatChMod?

Not gone yet. Could ask this question in another area, but since you know what I've been doing with the file vault thing, I ask here.

After my success, just noticed a new folder has appeared in my home folder called Lost + Found.

Inside contains 27 items, the size is 4.9 MB.
There are three folders with the same files. Then a few individual files. Most files have for example: stopQueue. tiff; Utility.tiff; Network.tiff; English.1proj and other sorts of bizarre titled ones.

Delete or Keep for future? What exactly is this? Apparently appeared there right after doing my disk utility for repairing my file vault. Anyway, help most appreciative on this. Once answered, I'll go away. Heehee.
