Beware of scam phone calls when upgrading iPhone

I am a Verizon wireless customer and have 3 iPhones that I recently upgraded to the 17 series. About a week after my upgrade I started receiving phone calls that left a voice message saying

“The payment of $1099 for the recent order of Apple iPhone 17 Pro on your account. If you do not authorize this payment, please press one to speak to our customer support representative.”

I have not answered any of these calls. They all came from different numbers. I called one back and the person answered as if they were Amazon fulfillment, not Apple and I immediately hung up feeling confident it was a scam.

An e-mail version of this is a very common scam.

You get e-mail claiming that your payment method has already been charged for some expensive item that you never bought. The e-mail says you have 24 hours to contact "Customer Service" to dispute the charge.

The charge is fake, and the phone number belongs to criminals. Call them, and they will gather the information which they need to rip you off under pretext of needing it to process your "refund."

Case in point: this false "completed payment" e-mail from "Norton":
