Cannot update app due to Apple ID linked to old work email

Trying to update newest version of banking app. To do so I need I need to log into my apple account which has a really old work email address. Despite in my settings having my current and longstanding personal account.. keeps telling me that my password is incorrect but to change an email has been sent to old work email. Going around and around and getting very frustrated

Further along the lines of what Mac Jim ID was saying, it sounds like you didn't actually change the email address on the account, you set up a brand new Apple account with the new email address. The support article Change your Apple Account primary email address - Apple Support outlines various methods for changing the email address (Apple ID) you use for your Apple Account while retaining everything in your account. That's what should have been done.

That would suggest the banking app was downloaded with your previous work address and apps are always linked to the Apple Account used to download them. When you update an app that was downloaded with a different Apple Account, it will ask you for the credentials of that account. One option for you is to delete the app and download it again with your current Apple Account. You would need to log into the bank app again and if the bank account is using two factor authentication, then the verification code is sent to the location you set up on your bank account settings.
