USSD/MMI code run on iphones

A hacker contacted my husband about a security alert at my bank. The scammer gave him a USSD/MMI code (like *5005*7672* 1234567890# to type into his cell phone key pad & hit enter. A registration script was run. What should we do? It was run on my phone as well.

I’ve run these on my phone: ##002#   ← Cancels *ALL* call forwarding (most important)

##21#    ← Cancels forwarding when busy

##67#    ← Cancels forwarding when unanswered

##62#    ← Cancels forwarding when unreachable

##004#   ← Cancels conditional forwarding (some carriers)

Then verified using these:

*#21#   ← Shows if calls are forwarded

*#67#   ← Shows busy forwarding

*#62#   ← Shows unreachable forwarding

*#002#  ← Shows all

Other than changing my apple ID password, is there anything else I should do relative to the cell phones? Should I wipe them?

It sounds like they have tried to change the SMS Central number. I am not sure what the scam is about, as far as I know SMS messages cannot be forwarded. Calls can be forwarded, so it is good that you have turned off forwarding.

You can also check the settings here:

Settings > Apps > Phone > Call Forwarding > disable.

Regarding the other codes entered into the phone, I think you should contact your carrier. The codes communicate with their system, and they can probably help with the reset.

The USSD/MMI codes do not communicate with the iOS system, only your carrier and SIM card, so I would not be worried that your Apple Account is at risk, but it is good that you have changed your password anyway.

1. Contact your carrier and tell them about the codes you have been asked to enter.
