AirPort Extreme
The AirPort Time Capsule was a unique product in that it combined a Wi-Fi router and a hard drive in one package. No other manufacturer ever offered another product like this.
The AirPort Extreme was a Wi-Fi router with a USB port that would support Time Machine backups to a hard drive connected to the USB port on the router. Several other manufacturers offered similar products. Synology, Asus, TP Link and some of the Netgear Nighthawk models come to mind.
If you don't need to back up over a network, then the absolute simplest thing to do would be to connect a hard drive directly to your Mac(s).
If you want to keep the AirPorts and continue to use them to provide your Wi-Fi network.....and you want to back up using Time Machine over a network......the simplest thing to do would be to simply add a Network Attached Storage (NAS) using an Ethernet cable connection to the main router on the network.
If you plan to replace the AirPorts, then you would need both a new Wi-Fi router and a NAS to back up over a network.
When the time comes you will need to take a look at any NAS products that you might want to consider to make sure that they will support Time Machine backups over a network at the time. Synology....often recommended on this site.....would be a good bet here.
