How do I fix 'You left the conversation' issue in mixed group chats after upgrading to iPhone 17 Pro?

Update. Shortly after I posted, I tried another recommended fix and it seems to have worked.

I reset the phone back to factory settings but when I was setting it back up, I did not sign in to my Apple ID or do any back up. Skipped every set up prompt that wasn’t absolutely necessary to get the basic phone functions running and just set up a completely blank brand new phone. Once it was operational, I text a couple different group messages with android/iPhone mixed users and they went through just fine with RCS. Once I felt confident about that, I eventually signed in to my Apple ID and started backing up my photos, messages, notes, etc, but not my apps. I’ve just been slowly adding apps over time as needed. It’s been a couple months and I haven’t had issues with group messages since, so that must have fixed something. A little inconvenient but better than never being about to group chat with an android. Hopefully this works for you all too.

I tried everything that has been suggested except taking the phone to Apple. It's my wife's 17 Pro Max with iOS 26.2, and it wasn't receiving messages in a group chat with 4 iPhones and one Android phone. The problem started when the Android phone was added to the group. After many hours and lots of good suggestions, I tried something, and it worked. I signed my wife out of her Apple account, then did a hard reboot. (Volume up, volume down, long-press the power button.) Next, I went to Settings > Apple Account and signed her in again. After she was signed in, I synced Messages with iCloud. When it was done, I went to the Messages app and selected the menu in the upper right-hand corner. At the bottom of the menu is Recently Deleted. I selected that and found a message that had been deleted from that chat group before the problem began. I selected to recover that message, and I watched in amazement as EVERY message, image, and video that had not been received suddenly appeared. If you're wondering why I thought that would work, my guess has been that it's a cloud sync problem, and the messages are being received. They just aren't displaying. Why it only happened to one phone is anyone's guess, but my steps worked. Good luck, and I hope it works for you.

Turn off RCS messaging so it goes back to SMS texting. It worked on my 17Pro. I was getting same issue within a group of android and apple users.

I have been having the same issue since the end of November. I have a 17 Pro and am on iOS 26.2. I cannot send any messages when on RCS in group chats with a mix of Android and iPhone users. I can only send when I turn RCS off, but then I randomly do not receive messages in the chat when on SMS. I have also found that I will only receive messages when the Android user creates a new group message. It cannot be an iPhone user that starts it. I spoke to customer service three times and tried troubleshooting every way we could. I reset the phone to factory settings twice and am still having the issue. I went to the Genius Bar this morning and they tried everything they could and said they think its the service provider, or my specific phone line. So I went to ATT, and they gave me a new ESim and that did not work. They said its 100% not them since I can text Androids individually or even in a group message with just Androids. They said its Apple for sure. Now I am at a dead end, because neither can help me.

I'm having the same issue! Tried all the troubleshooting and it seems to have stopped for now, but it's so bizarre and irritating everyone in the chat (myself included)!

I just upgraded to 17 Pro and that's when the issues kicked in. I also noticed that these same group chats that used to have 3 Names at the top (because it's myself and my 3 friends) now show 4 Names at the top (myself included). I feel like the glitch is somehow related to that, but I can't prove why!

Many of you are saying this problem started when you updated to a new phone. This has nothing to do with the phone but everything to do with iOS 26. I have a 13 Pro that I just updated to the latest iOS from iOS 18, and I suddenly wasn’t showing up in a years long thread with my sisters, but it looked like I started a new thread with them when I replied in our old thread. One has an iPhone and the other has an Android. The iPhone user has not had any problem since she updated hers. I’m going to try some of the solutions offered here. Hoping one of them works.

Well since this thread was started the iOS was 26.2. Apple has release 2 updates and this issue is STILL not fixed. It’s obvious this isn’t a “one off issue” They should be focusing on fixing this instead of adding more emojis.

I have been getting the "you left the conversation" on a group chat. It is happening at all hours of the day and night and I have not left the conversation. I have a 16+ pro. This appears to be a bug that needs to be fixed. I have tried everything and nothing fixes it. Would love to hear from apple support?????

same issue 🤷‍♀️. Have also tried all the same troubleshooting. My husband and I both updated to the iPhone 17pro max, with Verizon. He is not having the same issue and we have identical phones and plans. Same color too, I know that has nothing to do with it, but it’s Apple.

I turned off RCS and it stopped the you have left the conversation, but then I started not receiving messages in groups and that’s even worst.

apple needs to fix this. Was due for an upgrade so I got the iPhone 17 and I wish I never had. This is so frustrating

I have the same issue since I upgraded. I tried the RCS to SMS fix and still have the same issue. Also for some reason it has mysteriously blocked some of my contacts in that same group. Frustrated as unable to respond to the group either as a whole but can view their messages.

Same I have done all the “fixes” and NOTHING HELPS! It’s ridiculous. I didn’t even notice it until after reading all the issues is that is ONLY between iPhone/android messages. Luckily the other ppl in the group texts aren’t getting the notifications too she’s left no wait she’s back. Nope hold on she left again. Oh now she’s changed the group name. Again. For the 40th time!!! But she left again.

Like everybody else, I’m having the same problem. I don’t wanna turn off RCS because some of the users in my group can only be contacted through that Platform. The started after the recent upgrade? After it says, I’ve ended the conversation I cannot repost to it. Solutions?

Seems like it’s the PHONE and not the IOS?!?! Because none of us have had this issue until the upgrade to the 17! Seems a few of us are on diff iOS too. Apple has GOT to fix this!!!

i really don’t want to reset to factory settings and have to go through all that and download apps etc one by one by one.

i am all now having issues pulling up photos in texts messages- they have been offloaded and clicking on the pic icon doesn’t bring the picture up to view it. It’s just been a blank icon.

having issues with “all black” photos showing up in my camera roll too. As if I set the phone down and accidentally took pics of the table or whatever.

I don’t know what’s going on. But I am regretting upgrading to this phone. It’s been a nightmare

Went from a 15 pro to a 17 pro and it broke all of my group chats that included Android users. I am routinely “leaving the chat” and I also show up as one of the members in that chat, as if I’m chatting with myself. (This is different from before, where I’d only see the non-me members of the group when I viewed group info.)
