My messages not sending in group texts.

I recently discovered that messages I have been sending in group texts (not iMessage). The messages appear to send (time stamp and all) and I do not receive 'not delivered' error message, but the recipients never receive the message.

This occurs with a plain text message and sending photos. As far as I can tell these issues started sometime around last Tuesday evening (the last photo I confirmed recipients received in a group text). This is isolated to group texts (both with android only recipients and a mixture of iPhone and android users). Sending SMS text to individuals (1 recipient) works fine. No issues with iMessages both group and individual.

I am working with the T-Mobile as well just in case this is a network issue - the ticket is still open at this point. They were not very helpful as they had me go through troubleshooting steps I already tried on my own.

Device: iPhone XS Max (A1921)

OS version: 17.5.1

Troubleshooting steps taken:

  • Restarted device.
  • Deleted the entire thread in Messages and tried again.
  • Toggled iMessages off and then back on.
  • Toggled Send as SMS off and then back on.
  • Toggled MMS Messaging off and then back on.
  • Force re-started device.
  • Verified I have storage space on my phone (only using 50GB of 512GB)
  • Reset Network Settings.

The only troubleshooting step I found online, and I didn't try is toggling the Group Messaging off then back on. This is because toggle isn't showing up on my device under the MMS Messaging toggle like it shows in the screenshots.

Has anyone else encountered this issue? Thanks.

In my case the issue ended up being on T-Mobile's end. After they filed a ticket they were supposed to follow up with me in 2 business days (they didn't - shocker, I know) so I called them back after 4 business days. This ended up being on a weekend so this will be light on the details since I was speaking to their B-Squad.

They advised the issue was on their end and was impacting a lot of customers, but as of that morning it had been resolved. I fired off some group MMS group messages and confirmed people were receiving them. I asked if they could advise what the issue was and they couldn't. It was obvious they were reading from a script and didn't want to deviate from it in any way.

As for the Group Messaging toggle being missing, I am guessing this was removed in an iOS update at some point as I recently upgraded to a new iPhone (nothing wrong, just due for an upgrade) - the toggle still isn't there, but MMS group messaging works fine. Unfortunately, I didn't think to check my old phone prior to factory resetting it.

Here's hoping the rollout of RCS in iOS 18 doesn't break something.

Thank you. I spoke with a Sr. Apple Support Manager. He said that different network providers may not require the Group Toggle because it is now assumed that you can do Group Messaging without having to turn a toggle switch to do so. In my case AT&T doesn't require this. Having gone thru all the trouble shooting that we have both done; Apple didn't have any more suggestions. I did ask him to log a bug ticket since this is pervasive being reported on the internet...he said he will. I will now contact AT&T and log a case as you noted.

You would need to wait for T-Mobile tech to resolve the issue for you.

I have the same issues, done all the same recommendations, I have the same phone on the AT&T network. Group Messing Toggle in messaging has disappeared. Nothing I have done results in the Group Toggle being available again. I am on iOS 17.5.1 (latest). My Group Messaging stopped working as you described in since June. Not sure if this a bug in the OS or not? Please share any updates you determine. Thank you

The same answer applies to you as well, contact AT&T.
