AirPods not connecting to FaceTime on MacBook

Strange problem: Neither my new AirPod Pro 3 set nor my older AirPod Pro 2 set connect to FaceTime on my MacBook. They are fine with everything else: phone, iPad, MacBook in general, Zoom, etc. but not FaceTime. I've tried everything I can think of and nothing has worked. I can use FaceTime on my iPad and phone but not on my MacBook. Any ideas about what to do? Thanks in advance.

Fixes include:

  • toggling microphone permission
  • manually choosing the AirPods in FaceTime
  • restarting Bluetooth daemon
  • forgetting + reconnecting AirPods on Mac
  • resetting FaceTime preferences
  • updating macOS
