Global Player radio stations unavailable in Apple Music

I'm based inthe UK and noticed in the last hour or so (27 Nov 25 12pm GMT) that I cannot play any radio stations (e.g. Classic FM, Capital) that are part of the Global Player network, either within Apple Music on my phone or via my HomePods. It was working first thing this morning but when I try now I just get the "resource" unavailable" error. I can play other radio stations that come under the "Local Broadcasters" section that are served by TuneIn (such as Virgin Radio UK or Smooth Chill).

I can play these Global Player radio stations directly on their web app and on the app on my phone but not via Apple Music.

Strange that it should have been working 4 hours ago but not now. I have not had any internet connection outages, changed or logged in or out of any accounts, or updated any apps, unless it's happened automatically in the background and I wasn't aware

Any ideas what could be causing the issue?

From Apple:

"Apple changed the backend for radio streaming but didn’t fully update Siri to handle these cases consistently. For stations like LBC, Siri still looks for the old Global stream first and fails instead of automatically switching to TuneIn.

We’ve noted it as a bug. We’ve escalated this feedback to Apple for review."

The point being that WE should not be required to add "via TuneIn" (the 'workaround' which is not completely reliable) to force the backend to go via TuneIn if the Global stream has been deprecated but somehow left instructionally available.

Update 05Dec25 18:00 GMT (day 9): I chased up Global Player support again to see if they could add weight by means of an escalation into Apple for a speedy resolution, here’s their response… “I (GP service agent) have been in touch with our team, who have confirmed that they're still in talks with Apple directly to resolve this issue.

Unfortunately, we are unable to confirm a time frame as to when this will be resolved.”

I’m in the same boat. I have a morning automation and my kitchen HomePods used to play classic fm at 6am but since updating to 26.1 this is no longer the case.

If I ask my HomePods to play classic fm I either get the response ‘there was a problem with apple music’ or it will start playing but stop after 10–15 seconds.

26.2 has been installed and the issue hasn’t been fixed; I’ve also recently updated my eero WiFi system and that also hasn’t fixed it.

I’m glad I’m not the only one with this issue!

Call me cynical, but if this issue had affected a couple of dozen US radio stations instead of UK ones, it would have been fixed by now...

I've found that the issue with the Global Player stations is a real mixed bag. A number of stations can still be played by name - I've not been through every one of them but these are the ones I've tried that work simply by saying "Siri, play <station name>":

Capital (have to say "Capital radio" and then it plays a local variant of the station)

Capital Anthems

Capital Chill

Gold Radio

Smooth Relax (it played OK after part of the "sorry, there was a problem with Apple Music" message was announced)

Heart 80's

Heart Musicals

Radio X 90's

Classic FM Calm

These stations don't work by saying the name:

Capital Xtra

Capital Xtra Reloaded

Smooth (radio)

Classic FM

LBC

These ones worked when adding "via TuneIn" to the command:

Capital Dance (just asking for the station by name played some sort of playlist)

LBC News (just asking for the station by name played a podcast)

One that didn't seem to fit any of the patterns above was Smooth Chill - asking by name-only played something, but it wasn't from TuneIn and wasn't the Global Player radio station. Adding "via TuneIn" didn't make any difference

Getting fed up with the perceived lack of action now. AirPlay is clunky and awkward, and not acceptable as a long-term solution. I have lots of HomePod Minis scattered around the house, and when streaming via AirPlay I can't simply ask one of the HomePods to "play this in <room name>" as I move around the house. I get "Sorry, I can't do that when using AirPlay". The stream has to be redirected from the device I am AirPlaying from, which is not always in the same room I'm in at that moment, so I then have to trek around the house to find it. That might be OK in a small apartment, it's not so OK in a three-storey farmhouse when the device is in the lounge and I'm in an attic room.

@stephenseuk would it perhaps help if more of us bombarded Apple Support with complaints about this issue, to lend it some more weight?

Good grief, have we finally stirred Cupertino into action?? Just tried this myself and yes, "Siri, play classic FM radio" works 🙂

I've also checked Capital Xtra and Smooth Chill, neither of which worked yesterday, and adding "radio" to the end of the command works for both of those too.

THANK YOU, either Apple or Global, whoever fixed it. It took too long, but we got there eventually! And thanks to all the contributors on this thread who helped along the way

Update 21 Jan 26: this Global Player/Classic FM streaming issue has been around for c. 8 weeks now.

I chased up Apple support (yet again) today, the service agent reported that they are still looking into this issue with no resolution in sight, despite numerous call-ins from other users. There is a real vagueness on where the issue lays.

I’m so disappointed with Apple of late as there’s no apparent ownership of users’ issues, and no real means to escalate or lodge a meaningful complaint into this global company.

I’ve also not had a recent update/response from Global Player support.

ps. some have stated that asking Siri to play eg “Classic FM via Tune In” works, from my experience this does not work, along with other streams from Global Player. Streams native to Tune In work fine.

@bigjules, totally agree and yes the more users who report into Apple Support the better, I’ve also lodged a complaint on this matter via: Product Feedback - Apple

WRT LBC radio, it is native to TuneIn. However to get Siri to successfully stream this station you have to be overly precise in what you ask for otherwise as you say a podcast is played, so for Siri to play LBC I say the exact following “Siri play LBC News London Radio” and it then plays the desired station, any deviation from this and it’s hit and miss.

I’m finding Siri of late a right mess and often have to repeat my commands 🤯.

Not to deviate from our original issue around Global Player streaming issues via Apple Music/Homepods/Siri 👍🏼
