If i go to an Apple store will they be able to hook it up and transfer the data across?

Sorry, but no. Both iPhones must be working correctly to transfer data.

Your next question might be can the "old" phone be repaired. No again, since the replacement process erases the data on the phone.

Hopefully, you will set up automatic daily backups on your new phone.....they are really important.

Backups MUST be done before something goes wrong. If the screen is broken and you can't operate the phone, you can't do anything to save your data. All you can do is hope you were syncing things which meant the most to you, like photos and messages with iCloud. If you weren't, you'll have to set up the new phone NOT from backup since you don't have one. You'll at least be able to download all apps you've downloaded previously as long as you use the same Apple Account on the new phone.

This may be a painful lesson that backing up ones phone every night, while the phone is plugged in to charge, connected to Wifi is of paramount importance.
