There are some circumstances in which the Always On Display will turn off.

Sleep Focus is enabled or another Focus that has been configured
Low Power Mode is enabled
Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay
Your iPhone is face down or in a pocket/bag where the front camera is covered
You're using a Continuity Camera
Your iPhone is idle for a while (it learns your behaviors)
You walk away with your Apple Watch

Shaking the iPhone 14 Pro Max makes a sound from inside, but the sound is only heard when shaken close to the ear.
