Passcode expired prompt on upgrade. on changing passcode, iphone says wrong passcode

Iphone 14 IOS was auto updated last night and a message popped up saying the Passcode is expired and was forcing me change the passcode. it was not allowing me to use Whatsapp or nay other app. when i tried to change the passcode, i was prompted to enter the old passcode with a the full keyboard layout instead of the number pad. i did manage to change to a new passcode last night. today morning i restarted the phone and it asked me to enter the passcode and says invalid. i cant logon to the phone. was there anything to do with the upgrade?
