Configure Favorites Sidebar

I absolutely HATE the changes to the favorites sidebar in 26.1. Before the upgrade I had everything organized just as I liked it and could move from site to site with one click. Now it takes at least three clicks to get from one site to another. I don't need a 1 cm. large icon with description to tell me what the site is for - it's a favorite so I already know what it's for and why I want to go there! I used to be able to see multiple heirarchies simultaneously, now clicking on one hides all the others. Extremely verbose and not IMHO user-friendly. Is there any way to configure 26.1 to let the sidebar work as before?

and that is why we asked two questions of the OP.

6x6 asked "Have you tried to click the "..." icon in the sidebar (top right) and choose the Compact view?" that applies to users of MacOS Tahoe.

and it is why I asked "are you running macOS Sequoia? or are you using macOS Tahoe?" because there are different solutions depending on which macOS you are using.

you are correct. on sequoia you will not find the "three dots" to change your bookmarks sidebar view. it is only present on Tahoe. But if you cannot (or don’t want to) upgrade to Tahoe, you still have a couple options.

the first option, you can lay a new sequoia install over the old one without completely erasing and reinstalling sequoia. afterwards, you will have sequoia with safari 18.6.

and the other option, (the one I landed on after trying both options) you may want to look at 6x6's reply in this discussion. if you are comfortable using terminal, their suggestion fixes things for those of us on sequoia with safari 26.1.

please note, if you are going to try the terminal commands, you need to grant terminal full disk access. go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Full Disk Access to do so.

thanks for that insight, Jeffrey. Unfortunately I'm on a work laptop and they dictate when I can do OS updates. I presume, though, that once Tahoe is approved and I can update that this fix will work. Thanks!

well, since an upgrade to Tahoe isn't in your cards, the other two options I mentioned work on sequoia. so maybe talk to your IT department and ask if you can try one of those other suggestions. :)
