Is there a fundamentals guide that takes the user through how to update one's understanding of how to use this atrocious software?

Take a look at the following link to Apple's online help tutorial. It has a good search engine where you can search by descriptive word or click on specific subjects in the sidebar. The tutorial provides step by step instructions for most of iMovie's features.
