When I open files in Apple Pages a box appears around the entire page and other subsequent pages in the file. How can I prevent this?

That may be the layout outline that is drawn around the header, footer, and body text areas of the document. You can toggle that on/off with View menu > Show/Hide Layout or the shift+cmd+L (⇧⌘L) keystroke.
