Help, iPad's "other" space taking so much space!!!!!

My "other" data was increasing at a fast rate to about 18 GB. It happened when I tried to add picture folders to my iPad when there wasn't enough free space. iTunes would create "optimized" versions of the pictures then say, "no photos were copied because there was not enough free space". The optimized photos were then apparently saved to the iPad as "other" data as my "other" would increase by about a GB or 2 each time. Next time I synced with out freeing more space the same thing would happen again, taking up even more free space. I restored the iPad from backup which freed up the "other" data and brought my total back down to .4GB. I think Apple intended for these optimized photo files to be used upon the next attempt to add the photos but a glitch causes it to be inaccessible to iTunes which then reoptimizes the photos. Hope this helps.

Alright, i understand your problem completely. I had the exact same problem; just the fact that my summary indicated a space of 5.2 gb primarily because i had been dumb enough not to delete my applications that had been saved in Installous itself.(I'm not referring to the ones that you've installed but the ones that are in in the application itself!). Assuming this is the case, delete them; your space should be fine.

davidd31415, I think you're way off the mark man. I own a 64Gig and after updating to iOS 5, I'm now sitting at 20.3Gig of "other". I only had about 35 Gig woth of stuff on it before hand, and its only about a month old, so not enough time to build "other" files up.

Same Problem, have a ipad 64 gb had a tough day triying to upgrade to OS5 finally managed to do so by eraing the ipad, from within the ipad, set up as new ipad, upgraded the OS5, then restore from a previous backup, but now my OTHER is 19.5 gb... this is from yesterday, before I only hag about 3-5 gb of other... i did not synced the music, photos or books.

My "other" also just shot up to almost 7gb when it's never been over 1. I did a "Reset Network Settings" (Not reset All Settings) and "other" immediately dropped to 0.5gb. Hope that helps.

I recently had this problem on my ipad after updating to firmware 5.0. On mine i have 7.9gb in the other category. i found that it was mostly all video from an app that i didn't have installed anymore so i could not see it. On mine it was the app azul which allows you to play divx on your ipad. In the app you can add all your videos in. But with the app not installed you can not see the data. Maybe try to think back to any apps you may have uninstalled that could be holding your data.

My 60 gig iPad 2 showed 53 gigs of 'other' after I upgraded to iOS 5.

I tried your solution, sharkey49, and it worked. Down to .75 gigs!

I had this problem also when I first updated to OS5. I have a new 8GB 3GS. I shrunk other by unchecking all the tabs so nothing would sync. I resynced and other was down to 0.3 GB. I added back my items I wanted to sync. Other stayed at 0.3 GB when I resynced. We'll see if the problem keeps happening.
