Help, iPad's "other" space taking so much space!!!!!

I am writing this message because
I got my 16Gb wifi ipad about a month ago and I'm using it with great content.
However, for some reason the space in my iPad is decreasing and decreasing,
because the orange, "Other" space is increasing and increasing.

I remeber earlier on it was at zero but I dont understand why it keeps getting bigger....
Its taking up 4.54 Gbs right now... way more than any of the other categories.... and I cant think of anything that would be in the "other category"

Can anyone help me understand the situation??
Is it normal???
Is there anything I can do to get rid of the huge amount of "other"s?
I'm running out of space 😟 a problem which I wouldnt have if that other category didnt take up so much!!!!!!

Thank you for Reading...

I am not whining. I have been using Apple products in my business since 1994. I own about 40+ Apple computers. The programers need to know when there is a problem. I am just adding my voice. Reseting and restoring on a regular basis is not something that should have to be done to an Apple product. It is something I would expect from a Microsoft product.

You guys I think the issue might be iTunes.!!!!

Because every time I would connect my iphone or ipad to itunes I would see the other storage get larger so what I started doing when I connected it to iTunes was cancel (stop) whatever iTunes does when we first plug in our iPads/iPhones and then just sync what I had to do

Every since I started doing this my other storage has been around 2/5gb which is normal because of photos on icloud safari history iMessages and stuff like that but once I start deleting things like that I notice that I get more space on my ipad

So maybe you guys should try that?

I back up my ipad over icloud anyway so it dosent matter I don't need to sync it with my iTunes all the time unless I need to download something's but I do everything over my ipad.

Usually the only thing I would do on iTunes was just sync my music nothing else.

Do this

Restore

Sync

Set up as new

and sync your music only don't do anything else once it's done just unplug and started downloading all your apps one by one that's how I did it and it keeps my other strange under control

And just never sync your ipad to iTunes cause iTunes could be the issue here causing those huge other files.

Only sync your ipad unless you have to or want to and if you do trying doing what I said above to see if that works.

If that dosent maybe it could be cause you have something in icloud like to many back ups?

Or some imovies?

Check really closely what could be causing it

Meg St Clair,

If you haven't noticed there are 20 pages on this thread alone of people with this problem. Most people do not post their problems. I wanted to add my voice to those who are telling others. Constant restoring of an iPad to clean out Other Space is not a solution. Doing this is not what I have come to expect from Apple.

I will stick with idea there is a bug or it may just be with my iPad. I will continue to try and solve this issue. I just do not think I will waste my time posting here any more since no one here seems to know why this is happening.

Hey, folks. Can't believe people are attacking each other over this. It's a problem. From what I know about iOS, it might just be impossible to fix without some major internal architectural changes (iOS 8, maybe?). Apple offers iOS devices with a lot of memory. Some number of people (like foolish me) will just go out and buy one rather than fool with restores and other hugely inconvenient gymnastics. Don't like it? Go buy an Android tablet and dredge yourself up a different set of problems that maybe you can live better with. Apple isn't losing a lot of business over this (maybe even making money, in fact), so it's not a critical problem for them to fix, even if it were easy. Which, I'm pretty sure, it's not.

There's no single solution that will shrink Other for every user.

I think this problem is so frustrating because it has such a variety of causes, and they don't seem to happen for everybody. A screw gets loose in the operating system and issues like the following are the result (my iPhone does not have this problem at all, but my iPad mini does). These are the two issues that I have in particular.

One well-known cause seems to be that deleted music and videos, instead of going away completely (although they initially appear to) come back on the next sync as "Other." A workaround for this is to use DiskAid to clear out the folder iTunes>Music or any other folders under Media that are taking up an unexpected amount of space, then re-sync. To be safe, I clear out the contents but not the folders themselves. Be careful with this.

Another is that streamed media does not go away after viewing, even with restarting the iPad and syncing it several times as I did. My workaround, again, is DiskAid and clearing out the folder "CloudAssets."

The other well-known issues include a huge amount of email (can sometimes be fixed by syncing fewer days, if your account allows it) or other messages. iOS needs to start calling these "Mail" or "Messages" or "Voicemail" so we can grapple with the problem more easily. I have both an Exchange account and a Gmail account, and neither is the cause of my "Other" issue -- but for some people this is obviously the problem.

It also seems probable that some other miscellaneous apps get their data labeled "Other" rather than "Documents and Data" as they should be. I hypothesize that data that is mislabeled in this way does not go away when you look at your usage in the iPad's settings and try to delete data from bloated apps. I think some of it gets hidden away in obscure folders and never cleared -- a problem similar to the first two I described.

Don't restore your iPad from a backup. Yes, the extra "Other" will disappear temporarily, but it will be right back within days. This is not a permanent fix. I think it is possible that a complete reset could fix the problem at least until that same screw gets loose again.

This problem is totally unacceptable.

I have followed some of the suggestions here to reduce Other down to a reasonable level and they worked - for a VERY short period of time.

I don't use email very often on my iPad so attachments are not an issue.

I resorted to loading up my iPad2 with movies transferred from iTunes and that kept the issue under control - unitl I deleted those movies and transferred other ones. Then, Other shot up immediately.

It would seem to me that this is something that Apple has to address IMMEDIATELY in order to keep their products viable. As it is impossible for us, the owners/users, to address this problem easily on our own.

If it is data not being completely wiped once an item is deleted - be it an app, movie, music, whatever - then the OS should be reworked to totally delete it or write over it as necessary.

I had been thinking of upgrading to the newest iPad and giving my wife my current one but, with this issue that doesn't seem to go away, I will be looking at other tablets to upgrade to.
