Help, iPad's "other" space taking so much space!!!!!

I am writing this message because
I got my 16Gb wifi ipad about a month ago and I'm using it with great content.
However, for some reason the space in my iPad is decreasing and decreasing,
because the orange, "Other" space is increasing and increasing.

I remeber earlier on it was at zero but I dont understand why it keeps getting bigger....
Its taking up 4.54 Gbs right now... way more than any of the other categories.... and I cant think of anything that would be in the "other category"

Can anyone help me understand the situation??
Is it normal???
Is there anything I can do to get rid of the huge amount of "other"s?
I'm running out of space 😟 a problem which I wouldnt have if that other category didnt take up so much!!!!!!

Thank you for Reading...

Well that sure shows your ignorance doesn't it. Not to start a flame war but in my house I have 2 windows machines 2 apple machines and a 3 Ipads of various species. NONE of them need "resetting and restoring on a regular basis" I detest people like you who put down a product they obviously have never used. I have used both windows machines, Linux and mac machines and even an old Silicone Graphics machine and I have NEVER reset and restored anything.

Ipads do have a problem with the other data. Just look at the 21 pages and counting on here.

Apple support? Well, that consists of people like you and me logging in and trying to figure out what the problem is. They have great support until your warrantee runs out then they run off and users like us log in and try and piece out a fix. Usually someone has hit on a fix. Like the sound issue on the ipad where it just disappears and the fix is to change languages then go back. Problem fixed. Apple would not admit it was a problem or that it existed. Forget saying that they are working on a fix.

S0, if you have nothing to say good to say about a windows machine, say nothing. Your bad mouthing a system you know nothing about does not help anyone.

I recently had my "other" balloon up from the usual 1.5GB to almost 5.5GB. I had been watching movies through the cloud that I just bought from iTunes so I knew that's what had caused it. Using iExplorer I navigated to "CloudAssets" and there was a 3.7GB MP4 file... along with another one that was 740MB. Deleted them and other shrunk to standard size. Seems that sometimes the iPad won't delete the video content you've watched from cloud.

So I tried everything and last thing, which appears to have worked for me, was to do "new" restore and then "new" ipad setup - ignoring all prior restores. "Other dropped from 28gigs (yes 28gig!) other to 785mb. Now adding applications a few at a time - I dont have the patience for one at a time - and then I will do the music. Fingers crossed.

This is actually my first post in the 'support' community. I have had Mac, iPhones and iPads for years and I have never had this 'other' problem before.

I am not the most tech savvy chick and I did something that helped. I saw people saying delete certain apps and do the restore...but none of those things helped me. It took me a few hours to do the restoration from iTunes and it still didn't do anything. So I backed up everything I cared about and I erased everything. Then instead of setting it up as a new iPad I did the restore from my last backup and it had all the same things I wanted and had on my iPad previously but the 'other' section was under 1GB from over 6GB previously.

Okay... So no it wasn't rocket science but it was fast and easy.

I do think Apple should do something to fix this because I don't think we should have to worry about these kinds of things. So for those of you out there that were super bothered by this (like I was) and maybe don't want to invest in the time or savviness it takes to do some of the other things that were suggested this worked great for me.

Cheers everyone! 🙂

Using iexplorer worked for me. I had 10Gs of "other" space. It was some mov files that weren't being deleted. I just used the trial version of iexplorer (just google it), navigated to the CloudAssests file and deleted the large files in there. Stinks to have to do this, but it works and is relatively painless. Better and quicker than trying to restore your whole ipad. I have a first gen ipad mini.

This has been an issue I noticed on all my devices. I have an iPad2 that had 10.5 GB of other, and my kids had about 5 GB each on their iPad mini's. I tried all the tricks I could finds, just short of restoring. When iOS 7.1 came out I couldn't update my son's iPad over air because he didn't have enough space. Instead of deleting apps I figured I would hook it up to the computer and update it that way. I installed the update, then I did a sync and the other went down to a little over a GB. I tried the same on my iPad and it did the same.

Hi there -

The dreaded "other" has creeped up on my ipad as well. I have wiped iPad and restored from backup before which did the trick. I backup to iCloud now and currently am having trouble with the computer that had the original iTunes back up. Questions:

1) Will iCloud back up be enough to restore ipad to current content (but may just take longer?) I have everything checked in terms of what I'm backing up.

2) I have iTunes on another computer (my MacBook vs my iMac that's troubled) - with previous syncs directly plugged in, that content had to come from the original computer, but now that I back up to iCloud, could I restore from a direct connection to my MacBook as well? Both should have access to the iCloud back up?

Also, for those that reset "Network Settings" - is that on an iPhone only? my iPad is wireless, not 3G.

Thanks in advance - need to download some rentals before a vacation that doesn't have access to wireless and need that space!

P.S. Should add that ALL of my movies and TV shows are in cloud and not on device, so it's not those. Deleting music b/c i have iTunes match, but man that's tedious to do one artist at a time!

I tried kauaichris's method and it worked for me.

Started getting memory space warnings when I would start my nook app which made no sense as I have a 64GB ipad that is half full. I only fill it up when I dump movies on it to travel. But it did start happening right after I started using the iCloud streaming to watch some tv shows I had bought and decided to rewatch. First time I ever did the iCloud streaming. I check the availible space and it says less than a gig. Hooked it up to iTunes and it said I had 29+GB of "other."

I did the iExplorer (the one online, not the one in the app store) and cleared out the crap in the iCloud assets folder. Voila, other is now at 2.9 GB. Don't know what all that is, but it leaves me with room again.

I think iCloud streaming doesn't always clean up after itself since that is when it started. There were a lot of 1.8 GB or so video files in there which is about the size of the HD shows I was watching. Plus a bunch of 500+mb files. I left the folder but wiped out the contents.

Help, iPad's "other" space taking so much space!!!!!
