M2 Air serial number legitimacy

Hi everyone,

I just bought an M2 Air yesterday. I got a good deal on a what-supposed to be a new unit. Its a 16/256 variant. When it arrived, its still on the sealed brown box and with all the right unboxing experience. I didn't get to check everything at first because i need to use it right away for work. But when I'm done with work, i checked everything. One thing that got me asking is the serial number. My serial number is JHT###KJ#W. When i look it up on applecoverage, it only shows that it was only recently bought and without further info like year of production etc. It got me a asking, is the unit I bought is legit? maybe someone here can help?

Thank you!

It's most likely legit. We rarely hear about counterfeit Macs.

Apple's warranty coverage servers don't always keep up so the info you get back may be vague. If you got the computer set up and associated with your own Apple Account and all seems to work well, then I'd say use it for a few days or a week and check the coverage page again after that. I'm sure it'll get updated.

If you just can't stand it, you might carry it over to your nearest Apple Store and ask them to take a look.

New MacBook Airs come in a white box with images of the mac on it and it will also have printed on the bottom the serial number, Airport ID, and Bluetooth ID.

Also, I don't remember the model/year, but Apple switched from film type wrapping to just secure paper seals on the boxes.

A "brown box" is a bit suspicious wrapped in film seems suspicious for a "new Mac". Also, the last M2 MacBook Air was produced in March 2024.

While the Mac is likely legit, if this was purchased and repackaged or a 3rd party refurbished or renewed or a return from a user, warranty claims could be an issue.
