How do I fix random line breaks and capitalization in iPhone 13 keyboard?

My iPhone13 randomly skips to a new line and then capitalizes words mid-sentence when keying a text or email message. It has been doing this over the course of many releases

of operating software.

I'm currently using the latest version of software: iOS 26.1

VERY AGGRAVATING!!!!

This behavior on your iPhone 13 is usually caused by keyboard settings (like Auto-Capitalization or Smart Punctuation), accidental gestures on the screen. You can often fix it by adjusting keyboard settings, resetting the keyboard dictionary, or updating iOS.

Why This Happens

  • Auto-capitalization & Smart punctuation: iOS automatically inserts line breaks or capitalizes after certain punctuation marks. If the system misinterprets your typing, it may jump to a new line and capitalize incorrectly.
  • Dictation interference: If dictation is enabled, iOS sometimes inserts periods and capitalizes words mid-sentence based on the pause duration while dictating.
  • Touch sensitivity: On-screen keyboard taps can be misread as “Return” if your finger brushes the edge of the keyboard.
