How to fix constant coreaudiod crashes and audio cutting out on 2019 MacBook Pro?

MacBook Pro (2019) – Audio Cutting Out / coreaudiod Constantly Crashing


Hi everyone,


About 3 -4 weeks ago I suddenly started experiencing a persistent audio issue on my MacBook Pro (2019). The sound works for 1–3 minutes and then completely cuts out. When this happens, I have to manually restart the audio service using:


sudo killall coreaudiod


This temporarily restores the sound, but it stops again after a short while. Sometimes it crashes my IOS too.


Symptoms

  • Audio works briefly, then stops.
  • coreaudiod repeatedly crashes.
  • Issue affects all apps (YouTube, Safari, system sounds, etc.).
  • No external devices connected.


Troubleshooting I've already tried

  • Reinstalled macOS (latest version).
  • Performed full macOS recovery and clean install.
  • Reset SMC.
  • Reset NVRAM/PRAM.
  • Deleted audio preference files.


Despite all this, the issue still persists.


Current status

The only workaround is killing coreaudiod repeatedly. The problem returns every few minutes.


Request

If anyone has experienced this on a 2019 MacBook Pro or knows what might be causing coreaudiod to crash this frequently, I’d appreciate any advice or potential fixes?

I’ve seen similar issues on some MacBook Pro models, though it’s not very common. Since you’ve already done a clean reinstall, reset SMC/NVRAM, and deleted preference files, it does seem like this could be a hardware-related problem, possibly with the audio chip or logic board.


A few additional things you could try before contacting Apple Support:

  1. Create a new user account on your Mac and see if the issue happens there. This can rule out some user-specific software conflicts.
  2. Boot into Safe Mode and test audio. If it works in Safe Mode, it might indicate a third-party extension or software conflict.
  3. Check Console logs for coreaudiod crashes. Sometimes it gives a hint about what’s triggering the crash.


If none of these help, it might be best to bring it to an Apple Store or authorized service provider. Persistent coreaudiod crashes after a clean install often point to a hardware fault, and Apple can run diagnostics to confirm.

yours is not the first report of issues here

Thanks. The issue persisted even after creating a new user.


I also logged in using Safe Mode, and I noticed something important: no audio output devices are detected at all. This is strange because in normal mode, I do see Mac Internal Speakers listed under Output.


Question: What does it mean when Safe Mode cannot detect any audio device, but normal mode shows Internal Speakers (even though the sound still cuts out)?
