HomePod Siri asks for temperature when turning on/off lamps

On HomePod (MTJT3AX/A) running version 26.1, a ‘Hey Siri, turn on/off the lamps’ command responds with ‘What temperature do you want to set?’.

I thought this might be asking about colour temperature (though my lamps do not support this) so when I say ‘Warm’, Siri responds with some random Wikipedia article.

All other reply’s are met with silence.

If I disable ‘listen for Hey Siri’ on the HomePod and try on my iPhone the command to turn on/off lamps works fine.

Has anyone else experienced a similar issue and have a fix?

Rename your accessory category from “Lamp” to “Light”

This fixes the problem for most users.

Steps:

  1. Open Home app
  2. Tap and hold your lamp
  3. Choose Accessory Details
  4. Tap Type
  5. Change from Lamp → Light
  6. Save
  7. Restart your HomePod

Now say:

“Hey Siri, turn on the lights.”

This works consistently.
