How do I disable Smart Card login on MacBook Pro after signing in with a former work account?

Hi, I used my Macboom pro to sign in to my former work that used Samarkand. I no longer work there but my MacBook Pro doesn’t let me login without that smart card. It doesn’t exist any more. I am trying to set smart card to false in the recovery mode bash-3.2 but none of the cmds are accepted . I’m was in /usr/bin/shin but also with bash-3.2# as root still commands like sc_auth is not accepted. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ty.

Typically, if a company elects to use a security "solution" on devices that access their systems, only they can remove such protection. Whether it is data security of an anti-theft measure, the company's IT people need to disable it for you.

It's not just company-owned computers. We see similar reports here of privately owned devices that needed secure company access.

What is the exact model of your Mac and version of macOS involved?

You can get the exact model by entering the system serial number on the Apple check coverage page here, but please don't post the serial number on the forum since it is considered personal information:

Is Filevault enabled?

FYI, it is best to always have a second computer handy for when you may need to install an employer's software so it does not affect your primary computer. Or perhaps better yet, only use a VM for those purposes so it never touches the hardware & keeps the employer's software separate from your own system. Plus a VM image can be easily removed when you are finished with it. You always want to separate work from personal devices in some fashion.

Hi and thanks for your response. Unfortunately, I do not have access to the company’s IT. Yes, I was using my own device working remotely but configure to VPN to work (Gov contacting). What other option I may have? I really don’t have much data on the machine and it won’t hurt me if I format the drive. Is that an option? How to format while in recovery mode please? I didn’t see such option. I purchased a solid state drive and installed on this machine of mine and beefed up memory to use for work from home. It’s not not good to see machine go wasted.

best Regards,

Masood

Not really. I cannot login to go to Preferences. If I cannot set smart card to false in recovery mode then I rather have the option to format the drive and erase the whole drive to reinstall a fresh image.
