Sometimes the system is awake but the UI layer is stuck.

Try:

Press Esc
Press Spacebar
Press any arrow key
Move mouse or tap trackpad
Plug in an external USB keyboard/mouse
Press Command + Option + Shift + Esc (force Quit Screensaver)
