File upload error, "couldn't communicate with a helper application"

My files on my mac have a cloud with an exclamation point next to them. When I hover over it, it says "couldn't communicate with a helper application." How do I fix this issue? I'm very nervous about losing my files.

Restart iCloud sync services manually

This is the fastest and safest method.

Open Terminal and run:

killall bird
killall cloudd

These commands:

  • Restart the iCloud sync engine
  • Force the helper process to relaunch
  • Fix the “can’t communicate with helper” issue for many users

Then wait 1–3 minutes for Finder icons to update.
