Facetune scammers!

I installed the Facetune app, it suggested a yearly subscription of 399.99 PLN (around 100 EUR) but also it offered a trial.

I chose the 7 day free trial and canceled it at once on the same day - was charged 0 PLN but I clicked to verify it with my Apple Pay bank card.

All good until 6 days later!!!

A day before the trial ends suddenly I get an ApplePay charge pop up - 180PLN (~ 45 EUR) from Facetune!

This amount was NEVER even mentioned anywhere!

I didn't start any subscriptions in the app itself, only through App Store!

They got my applepay card and just started charging me random $$$!!!

Total 100% scam.

I don't understand why Apple is not doing anything??? I see such sort of complaints back from 7 years back.

True scammers on the apple store!

I've filed a scam complaint to Apple and will be filing it to their payment processor.

Just never ever use their apps, it is designed to simply steal your money.

I think what happens with Facetune scam is that first you confirm the subscription at Apple and then at once somehow you also confirm it once again - on their website which obviously masked to look like a continuation of Apple's - and this is where they get your apple pay token for future scam.

Unfortunately Apple is required to allow developers to offer their own subscriptions that are not managed by Apple. Apple fought against this in court and lost and had to pay huge fines. Following that loss they provided a pop up warning users that they were not using Apple's preferred method for subscriptions and it was being managed by the developer and was sued again and lost where they could not even warn users.

The courts put the users on notice that they were responsible for their own actions. The in-app purchase that is managed by Apple has a unique UI that you should be familiar with and shown below. Anything directing you to a website where you have to choose your payment method is not one managed by Apple. I agree with Smilin-Brian that writing a review for the app in the App Store is the appropriate way to go here and you can also use the  reportaproblem.apple.com website where one of the options is to report an app as a scam.

First, be sure to ⇢ cancel a subscription.

Even though you had cancelled it, you may need to verify that it is indeed cancelled. ⇣

Then click ▶︎ Request a Refund.

NOTE: Refunds are not guaranteed, they are the exception.

According to Apple:

If your refund is approved, the funds are applied to the same payment method that you used to buy the item.

Here's how long it takes for a refund to appear on your account or statement:

Store credit—It might take up to 48 hours to see the refund in your Apple Account balance.

Mobile phone billing—It might take up to 60 days for the statement to show the refund. Processing time might be affected by your carrier. You can contact your carrier for an update.

Credit and debit cards, Apple Pay, Apple Cash, and all other payment methods—It might take up to 30 days for the statement to show the refund. If you don't see the refund after 30 days, contact your financial institution.

Note: Once a decision has been made on your refund request, you will get a follow up email from Apple.

Click ▶︎ Check Refund Status.

Final Note: I have written a detailed user-tip on this subject that goes into greater detail.

See ▶︎ Request A Refund for more.

Good luck! 👋🏼😉

Apps cannot charge your Apple Pay card directly — all charges come through Apple.

Wrong! You give the merchant the unique token to your card once and a recurring subscription charge can be billed directly to your card and not involve Apple at all. Any app can use their own website where they accept Apple Pay as payment for a subscription that is not managed by Apple and will not appear in your subscriptions managed by Apple.

I understand this is a bot response from this poster and no follow up will be given, but it is important to correct any false information provided by AI.

Exactly! I mean - yes the charge definitely went outside of apple store.

You cancel a trial on apple, but they have a simultaneous hidden "subscription" directly on their website and keep charing you.

They mask their subscription to apple's - so a user rest assures he's canceled it all. The Apple even sends reminders about an ending trial, etc so it looks 100% legit and then you get charged out of nowhere.

Real scam.
