Front camera not working after iOS 26.2 update

I updated to iOS 26.2. The front camera stopped working. When I switch cameras, only the rear camera works. What should I do?

Yeah I’ve seen this happen right after an update — front camera just won’t respond while the rear one works fine. Here’s a clean step-by-step order you can follow:

1. Force restart your iPhone

2. Check camera access & test in other apps
Go to: Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera → make sure apps have access
Then open apps like FaceTime to see if the front camera works there.

3. Reset all settings (no data loss)
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings

4. Update to the latest iOS version
Sometimes Apple patches these bugs quickly, Go to: Settings → General → Software Update
Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Mine started working again after the reset step, so there’s a good chance it’s just a temporary iOS 26.2 glitch 👍
If the problem persists, you may need a more thorough solution, such as performing a quick system repair to ensure a smoother user experience.

Update: If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn't working - Apple Support

You may try some of these steps. Please check after each step...

  1. Ensure your screen protector or case isn't obstructing the front-facing camera. See the poic below
  2. If you still need help, reset your Face ID, then set it up again. Go to Settings, tap Face ID & Passcode, then tap Reset Face ID. Next, tap Set up Face ID to set it up again. If Face ID isn't working on your iPhone or iPad Pro
  3. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches. Turn off your iPhone, wait for a few seconds, and then turn it back on.
    1. Restart the device. That's it.
    2. Still not solved --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support
  4. Corporate iPhone Profile Check and Removal Guide
    1. Is this your corporate iPhone? Then please contact the system administrator of your corporate.
    2. If it is your device, in that case, do you have any profile installed by your corporate/organization/enterprise/School Management?
    3. Erase the profile added by you If you have installed a profile on your own --> Install or remove configuration profiles on iPhone - Apple ...
    4. Please contact the system administrator of the organization who provided the profile to you
  5. Parts and service history
    1. With iPhone 12 models and later using iOS 15.2 and later, you can go to Settings > General > About to see the parts and service history of your iPhone and you can see if the camera has been replaced. If the repair was done using genuine Apple parts and processes, you will see "Genuine Apple Part" next to Camera.
    2.
    3. You will see an Unknown Part  message if the camera installation is incomplete or if the camera:
    4. Was replaced with a nongenuine camera
    5. Was already used or installed in another iPhone
    6. Isn't functioning as expected
    7. This message doesn't affect your ability to use your iPhone or access your camera. Learn more about iPhone parts and service history.
    8. If your iPhone's camera has been previously replaced, repaired, or serviced by an unauthorized service provider, it's worth noting that Apple may decline to provide service for your device. The decision to refuse service will depend on the specific components that were affected by the unauthorized service.
  6. If the issue persists, you can try resetting all settings on your iPhone. This will not erase your data but will reset all personalized settings to their default values. Go to Settings > General > Transfer & Reset > Reset > Reset All Settings and confirm the action. Note that you will need to reconfigure your settings afterward. All settings—including network settings, the keyboard dictionary, the Home screen layout, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards—are removed or reset to their defaults. No data or media are deleted.
    1. Reset All Settings: Return iPhone settings to their defaults - Apple Support:- Return iPhone settings to their defaults
    2. You can return settings to their defaults without erasing your content.
    3. If you want to save your settings, back up your iPhone before returning them to their defaults. For example, if you’re trying to solve a problem but returning settings to their defaults doesn’t help, you might want to restore your previous settings from a backup.
  7. Make sure you have the latest updates installed.
    1. Update Over-the-Air (OTA) —> Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support (IN)
    2. Update using iTunes/Finder —> Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support (IN)

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, it is recommended to reach out to Apple Support or visit an authorized service center for further assistance. They can provide specific guidance based on your device model and iOS version.

This did not work unfortunately. After backing up to cloud, erasing everything then restoring from icloud, we got to the face ID setup and the front camera was black again. We skipped the step and went into the camera app. Back camera working but when flipping to the front camera, it just crashes.

Then it's time to schedule a visit to your Apple Store Genius Bar for service options --> Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple

There's really nothing else anyone here can offer you at this point.

Im having the same problem with the update. My brother, sister, and daughter are now having the exact same issues but the issues did not occur for any of us until the update. So I think it’s pretty safe to say that it is definitely the update doing this. I just hope there is a way to fix this because nothing I’ve tried has worked on any of our phones…

If the update caused the front camera to stop working, it would have done it for everyone, but it didn't. So we can safely say it may be coincidence. Every device I have is running iOS 26.2. None are having any issues with the front camera.

After EVERY iOS update, the first thing I do is Force Restart my iPhone and I have never had a coincidental iOS update failure, ever. Do this and see if normal operation returns --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

And remember this procedure to do after each new update you install.

If so, this would be the first bug that affects 100% of devices.

In my case, my front camera worked perfectly. Face recognition worked great. I updated to ios26, and immediately the front camera stopped working (shifting to front lens just "flips" the camera to back lens again). Face recognition is DOA. I tried to re-set face recognition, but now get the error "cannot be set up."

This exact description is showing up for a LOT of users. God knows anything is possible, but this sure would be a heck of a coincidence if my fully functioning camera died the same second I updated.

I stand behind my words. If the update did this, it would logically do it to everyone. It didn't do it to anyone I know, including any of our iPhones. Keep in mind there is an installed user base of over 1.5 BILLIONS users. You say it's showing up for a "lot of users." This forum would be blown up if a lot of Apple users were having this issue. It's not. The tech press would be all over this. But they're not.

You could try a factory reset and restore and see if the problem is resolved. That means backing up your iPhone, then restoring it from backup. This link explains how to do that --> https://support.apple.com/en-us/118105

If this doesn't help, what you'll need to do is schedule an appointment at your Apple Store Genius Bar and have them test your iPhone to determine what the issue may be.
