Front camera not working after iOS 26.2 update

Personally, based on what you've described, something is wrong with your iPhone. Waiting for iOS 26.3 to magically fix an issue most aren't having doesn't seem the best course of action. If so, this would be the first bug that affects 100% of devices.

In my case, my front camera worked perfectly. Face recognition worked great. I updated to ios26, and immediately the front camera stopped working (shifting to front lens just "flips" the camera to back lens again). Face recognition is DOA. I tried to re-set face recognition, but now get the error "cannot be set up."

This exact description is showing up for a LOT of users. God knows anything is possible, but this sure would be a heck of a coincidence if my fully functioning camera died the same second I updated.

Face recognition doesn’t use the selfie camera. So specifically, what is the issue? Can you take a selfie? Does Face ID work?

Face ID uses an Infrared Camera, Dot Projector and Infrared Flood Illuminator. It’s a complex system and separate from selfie camera.

I had to have a new front camera installed, unfortunately.

You're right. There is no point in us arguing about this at all. This isn't Apple Support. This is a user to user only forum, which Apple neither participates nor reads for user feedback. There's no point in pointing out links or YouTube videos as you can also find links out there that suggest the earth is flat. It's not.

If you want to know what happened with your iPhone, take it to Apple. We can't diagnose it for you. We can't fix it for you. You should definitely try the backup/restore I suggested, but if it doesn't help, then you'll need help from Apple directly.

Don’t do the reset as it doesn’t work. We have to wait for another pole to do the next software update.

-burst mode on front camera can work

-selfie camera can work

-front camera shows picture being taken (sometimes) but never saves photo. Also front camera video can freeze and then camera restarts.

-front camera video works

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

Wouldn't you expect if Apple messed something up on iOS 26, it would have messed it up for everyone? It didn't. In fact, very few people are reporting issues with their front camera on iOS 26. So advising someone to not restore their phone and to wait for an update, which is likely never going to address front camera issues, which is not affecting many people isn't great advice.

Or … it could be related to the 26.2 upgrade, as this seems like a lot of “pure coincidences”. Not jailbroken and working perfectly before upgrade.

Same issue. My camera comes on as it is taking a picture then the screen goes gray and won’t take pictures. There is nothing blocking it, the lens is clean, there are no updates. The only thing that makes it work is to reboot my phone at that moment. Then the next time I open the app, it starts going blank and not taking photos again.

Im having the same problem with the update. My brother, sister, and daughter are now having the exact same issues but the issues did not occur for any of us until the update. So I think it’s pretty safe to say that it is definitely the update doing this. I just hope there is a way to fix this because nothing I’ve tried has worked on any of our phones…

Same with my daughter's iPhone 16. The phone updated overnight and now the front camera won't work (Black screen). Tried all the advised steps to resolve with apple support and nothing has worked. Nearest Apple repair business is over an hour away 🙄

Hi. Thanks for your response. They got me to backup and reset her settings. Do you mean backup and restore the entire phone? We have not done this. We could do this tonight though if this may resolve the issue. Thanks again
