What all is in the /etc/hosts file?
It should usually look like this:
##
# Host Database
#
# localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
# when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
##
127.0.0.1 localhost
255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
::1 localhost
fe80::1%lo0 localhost
And for clarity, the Ø character shown above is a zero, not the letter O.
Remove the add-on anti-malware.
Remove the “coffee shop” VPN.
Update the Cisco Secure Client to current.
Update Citrix.
Remove Dropbox for testing.
Restart.
Lots of what look like old kexts here, too.
Given all of what is here, and given the apparent age of some of it, I’d be inclined to back up a couple of times, wipe, and re-install currently-necessary apps and current versions. I’d avoid installing the add-on anti-malware and the add-on “coffee shop” VPN apps (keep the Cisco AnyConnect VPN, if you are still using that — that’s not a “coffee shop” VPN), and would absolutely keep the Cisco AnyConnect VPN and Citrix apps current, if those are still necessary. If the printers here support AirPrint, test with and use that, too.
It’s possible that this is bad hardware, too. If the hardware is failing (memory, processor, etc), you still want to have a current backup, so having backup that for the restore also helps here. Apple Diagnostics can be run, but that tool tends to not be very good at spotting transient hardware errors.
Thanks so much. Several questions: how can I look in the hosts file you mention?
I thought I had removed Malwarebytes long ago but it was still there so I deleted it.
Is Nord a problem even if it's not connected?
The Cisco secure client I need for work, but not the AnyConnect. I cannot find a version of the Anyconnect application on my hard drive.
I actually have two cloned backup versions in addition to Time Machine, using Carbon Copy Cloner.
I'm not aware of any hardware issues.....but I'm also not exactly sure what I would see....
Thanks for your assistance. Appreciate any more input.
