WhatsApp Android → iPhone Migration After Setup — Is There Any Supported Path Forward?

When I purchased my iPhone at the Apple Store in NYC, I explicitly asked about migrating my WhatsApp history from Android to iPhone. I was told I could do the migration later, since it might take a long time. That turned out to be incorrect — the official WhatsApp Android → iOS migration only works during the iPhone’s initial setup using Move to iOS.

I returned to the store the next day, but unfortunately no one there was able to help. That was also my last day in the U.S. I now live in a country where only Apple Authorized Resellers operate, and they’ve told me this is “not their responsibility.”

As a result, I’m currently forced to keep my old Android device powered on so WhatsApp messages and media continue to back up. This has already caused several cases of lost messages and media, and I’m trying to stop this before more data is lost. I’d really like to move on from being tied to my old phone.

What I’m trying to achieve:

  • Ideally avoid resetting my iPhone, if at all possible

  • End up with a single, consolidated WhatsApp history on iOS.

  • Avoid further data loss.

  • Preserve my existing iPhone apps, settings, and data if possible.

What I understand so far

  • WhatsApp Android → iOS migration only works during initial setup.

  • iOS and Android WhatsApp backups are not compatible (Google Drive vs iCloud).

  • Restoring a full iPhone backup made before migration will overwrite WhatsApp data.

  • WhatsApp cannot merge two chat histories.

Questions

  1. Is there any official or accepted way to migrate WhatsApp from Android to iPhone without resetting the main iPhone?
  2. Has anyone successfully used a second iPhone as a “bridge” (migrate Android → iPhone #2, back up WhatsApp to iCloud, then restore that backup on the main iPhone)?
  3. If a reset is unavoidable:
    • Is there a way to create a near “carbon copy” of my iPhone apps/settings/data in iCloud,
    • Then reset the phone,
    • Migrate WhatsApp from Android,
    • And finally restore everything without overwriting the migrated WhatsApp data?

I fully realize some of these constraints may make this impossible, but I’d appreciate confirmation from anyone who has actually solved this or explored it deeply.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated — especially from people who’ve dealt with this exact situation.

Thanks very much.

Hey @lobsterghost1, thanks for the reply!
I know, but as you see here, I need to reset my phone to do so:

And as state above - I'd rather to either not reset the phone, or - if indeed unavoidable - to find a way to create a carbon copy before resetting to then restore (along with all settings, configs, message/browsing histories etc)

Sorry you don't like the answer, but WhatsApp has nothing to do with Apple. You'll need to ask Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp if there is any other way, but I suspect there isn't. Maybe visit a WhatsApp forum, if there is one.

I am not 'taking it up with Apple'. as much as I'm trying to get help with the community of nice people who support each other when in need.. thanks for the tip though

Any kind of backup recovery, whether Whatsapp or the general iphone backup, resetting to factory is usually necessary.

It is an unfortunate fact that cannot be worked around.

I don't know why it took Whatsapp so long to even introduce an android to iphone transfer. For years you could only go iphone to android.
