Need automated shortcut to turn off BT on IPad when connected to CarPlay.

I have an iPad and iPhone on the latest iOS and wear hearing aids (MFI) that stream content using a BT connection. Often, after using my iPad at home or at a coffee shop and being connected to my HA for streaming, I leave and often go on other errands with my iPad stored in the trunk. My HA stay connected via BT to the iPad, then when I’m out of the car I find that my iPhone won’t connect to my HA’s due to the existing connection to the iPad in my car. The challenge is remembering to toggle BT off on the iPad.

I want to be able to run a shortcut on my iPhone either manually or automatic that will turn the BT off on the iPad even when it is out of range. Is that possible?

Or could I create a shortcut that turns Bluetooth off on JUST the iPad that is in my trunk or in the car with me when the iPhone connects to CarPlay?

I did create an automation to turn off BT on the iPad whenever it leaves my home network or I leave my home address, but that won’t cover the scenario when I stop for awhile at a coffee shop but forget to turn off BT on the iPad later. Sometimes I’m at an appointment or meeting and cannot return to the car and manually toggle BT on the iPad.

The connection to CarPlay to trigger the shortcut would be the best scenario. Appreciate any suggestions.

This is a hack. If your iPad stays connected to a network (Wi-Fi or cellular), you could create an automation on the iPad based on a Focus mode (let's say Do Not Disturb as an example). The automation (on the iPad) would turn off Bluetooth (using the Set Bluetooth action) when the Focus mode is turned on (or off).

If you synchronize your Focus modes between your devices (this is the default), turning on (or off) the Focus mode on your iPhone would trigger the automation on your iPad.

You could even create a specific, aptly-named, Focus mode (in Settings > Focus) for this purpose.

I appreciate the ideas. I’ve made some progress, but the solution isn’t yet complete. When I leave home with the iPad, when it disconnects from the Home Network, Bluetooth turns off. When I arrive at the coffee shop and setup to do some work using a BT keyboard, Bluetooth is turned on.

Now, sometimes I lose track of time and suddenly I’m in a rush to get back on the road and I hurriedly pack the iPad up and forget to turn BT off so that my hearing aids will connect to my phone. So I need another shortcut perhaps that recognizes I’ve left a location and if so, turn the BT off.

Using a custom Focus mode was a good idea, but it requires manually turning it on which, requires remembering to do so. If there was an action that recognizes I’ve left a location as I walk back to my car and BT on the iPad is turned off, that would be perfect. And I try lots of coffee shops and locations for meetings so I need an open ended Focus mode that isn’t specific on a location.

This is all driven by my forgetting to turn BT off and therefore must be an automatic action without my input. I’m halfway there with the disconnect from the Home Network triggering the shortcut.

You mentioned CarPlay. Is your iPhone connecting to CarPlay when you enter your vehicle? If so, create another personal automation, this one on your iPhone, based on connecting to CarPlay. This automation would turn on the “special” Focus mode referred above. Your iPad would see it and its own automation would turn off its own Bluetooth.

By the way, you could use the Driving Focus mode as it seems rather appropriate.

Bummer, this won’t work if your iPad has no network connection ; it won’t receive the “notification” that a Focus mode was turned on.

If this is not indiscreet, how do you use the iPad? Standalone with no Wi-Fi connection or any network connection? Hotspot from your iPhone? I’m trying to think how else you could achieve this.

Thanks for hanging in there. I use the iPad Mini connected to the home network or to my iPhone hotspot. The iPad has a cover that when closed puts the iPad in locked mode with screen off. I use the iPad every morning for Bible reading, emails and news, then head off to meetings or time in a coffee shop.

Home Network

I was able to create a shortcut that when the iPad disconnects from the home network, the Bluetooth is set to off. Which worked every time I drove away from the house. But that only works when leaving home, still needing a solution that turns iPad BT off when leaving other locations after using the iPad with BT turned on.

Focus mode: Drive

Following your idea, I added the Drive focus mode on the iPhone, which automatically changes the focus to Driving and when the iPad is in the car with me, usually, after starting the car and CarPlay connects, the iPad also goes into Drive focus mode due to connecting to the iPhone hotspot and the Bluetooth gets turned off using the shortcut I made when that scenario is accomplished. But it didn’t consistently toggle off the BT, probably due to at times the iPad not connecting to the same network as the iPhone.

The other challenge is that I noted that the iPad stays in Drive focus and doesn’t turn off once the iPad has left the car.

Connection to CarPlay

I added the iPad as a device to my Honda and both the iPhone and iPad were listed as connected devices. I then made a shortcut that when connecting to the car network, set BT to off. But then the car would tend to choose the iPad instead of the iPhone for connection and it required me to go through the menus changing devices back to the iPhone, which was a non-starter.

Set BT when iPad is Locked

I created another shortcut that when the iPad is locked, then BT is set to off. That would probably be the simplest and most consistent shortcut since when I am done using my iPad I always close the cover which puts the iPad to sleep. The options to do that are available in the Shortcut menus when creating the shortcut, but I haven’t got it to work. This would be my choice as the least complicated.

I did a whole lot of try this, try that and it did get a little confusing trying to keep it straight what I tried and what I didn’t.

Thanks for the clear explanations.

If your iPad's only network connection is the iPhone's hot spot, the iPad will quit the connection very quickly after it is locked/put to sleep. (I just tested it with my devices.) This is the reason why the automations are not consistent in their operations; the iPad has no connection to rely on to receive the change in Focus mode.

There is no trigger in personal automations to detect when a device is locked/put to sleep. (I do mean an automation trigger, not an action; there is indeed the action "Lock Screen" to lock the screen from within a shortcut but this is not a trigger.)

I guess I'm out of suggestions at this point. Sorry.

Spoke too fast; there is another solution. You could use the disconnection from the iPhone hotspot to detect that the iPad was locked/put to sleep. So no need for any of the solutions we talked about.

On your iPad, connect to your iPhone hotspot and create a new personal automation based on the Wi-Fi trigger. Tap Choose and choose your iPhone hotspot in the list of Wi-Fi networks. Choose "Is Disconnected" and " Run Immediately." Tap Next and add the "Set Bluetooth" action and set it to off.

During my tests, the disconnection detection took anywhere from 1 second to 20 seconds but always succeeded.

I did all my tests by closing the Smart Cover of my iPad while the device was connected to my iPhone hotspot. My iPhone was next to me the whole time.

My tests consisted in using my iPad (connected to the iPhone hotspot), closing the Smart Cover (which locks the iPad just like pressing the top button) and using the iPad a few seconds later to confirm that:

  1. The iPad displayed a notification that an automation had run.
  2. The iPad Bluetooth was indeed turned off.

I’m not sure what you mean by locked and unlocked. Could you provide the exactly steps for each case so that I do further tests on my end?

I took a closer look and realized I had created a shortcut to turn BlueTooth on once my iPad connected to my Home Network. When I walked out of range of the iPhone hotspot, I assume (cover was closed) the BlueTooth turned off but then immediately turned back on when it connected to the home network, which was still in range.

I disabled the shortcut to turn BlueTooth on when connecting to my home network and now find that when connected to my iPhone hotspot but out of range, BlueTooth is turned off. I'm happy. This should work for me when I leave a location and having forgot to turn off BlueTooth so that my Hearing Aids will connect to my iPhone.

However, the shortcut is automatic, so now I really don't even need to think about doing that. The real test will come as I go through the scenario I've described, for real. Thanks for your help.

Merry Christmas!
