No Sound on a Mac:
I an NVRAM reset does not fix this...
Verify the Speaker's Existence:
Verify that the sparks are seen in System Information. If not, then you might have to resin tall the macOS to ge the driver's back.
Single-Out this User:
try creating a new Administrator user, and see if you get the same issue. If so, then it is likely a reward or macOS software error. If not, then it is an issue pertaining only to this user (likely a misconfiguration).
“The internal speakers are in System Preferences and seem to be working properly.”

Mac 2017 Sound:
A. Single Out this User:
Did you try another Administrator user? If not, give it a go,
B. Boot Up in Safe Mode:
(Hold Down: shift key) upon boot. In Safe Mode, Login items do not open at login, and certain settings are set aside.
C. External Audio Output Device:
What happens with external speakers or headphones? Do you get any output? If so, then it singles out the internal speakers.
I am not familiar with how my laptop works. Thank you for your A, B and C suggestions. Unfortunately I don't know how to perform these steps. I guess I will have to use my 2017 laptop with no sound. The battery is malfunctioning too, so I have to keep the laptop plugged in always.

You are welcome. Your Mac is olde, and obsolete. I'll always keep my 2018 and 2017 MBPs for the purpose of having an Intel-based Mac.

B. A Few Links to Refer to for Power:
Start your MBA and hold the D key. This is Apple Hardware Test online.
If it does not report any problem than boot into Recovery. Start-up holding Command and R or if that doesn't work, Command plus Shift and R and choose re-install Catalina or whatever you:re running.

You are welcome. And same here.
Reinstall the macOS:
Go Here: How to Reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support. When you do so, missing and corrupt system files are relocated, and replaced, respectively. Important: Be certain to create a backup of your Mac prior to all of this. That way, you can have something to restore from the Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall. Once reinstalled, see if this not longer occurs.

I have a cat I adore, my Gina
Hi,
NVRAM stands for non-volatile random access memory. This type of memory keeps important information safe even when a device loses power.
The internal speakers are in System Preferences and seem to be working properly.
Thank you so very much for all your help! I'll use the links you sent me.
Happy New Year!
