FaceTime shows persistent notification badge on macOS with no unread calls

Hello, I’m experiencing an issue with FaceTime on my Mac. The FaceTime app icon shows a persistent notification badge (red bubble with “1”), but I’m absolutely sure there are no unread calls, missed calls, or messages.

Here’s what I’ve already tried, none of which solved the problem:

Restarted the Mac multiple times

Signed out of FaceTime and signed back in

Deleted FaceTime-related cache and preference files

The badge remains even though FaceTime itself shows no unread activity. Everything appears normal inside the app.

I had the same issue on my iMac. I was able to get rid of it by removing icon from Mac Dock

  • Right-click the icon
  • Options
  • Remove from Dock

Then add it back to Mac Dock

  • Open FaceTime
  • Right-click its icon in the Dock
  • Options
  • Keep in Dock

1. Force Quit and Restart the Dock

This is the least invasive method and often resolves minor glitches.

  1. Open Activity Monitor (located in /Applications/Utilities).
  2. Search for ‘Dock.’
  3. Select the ‘Dock’ process.
  4. Click the ‘X’ button in the toolbar (or press Command-Option-Shift-Esc) to force quit the process.
  5. macOS will automatically restart the Dock.
