I am charging my iPhone 17 Pro Max with a charging block I purchased directly from Apple. It’s called “40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max”. When charging the iPhone, this charging block gets VERY warm. Is this to be expected?

Basically, yes. However, it should never get too hot to touch. One of the by-products of charging is heat and this is normal ... and the more wattage that is being used, the more the heat is produced.
The iPhone 17 Pro quick charge watt rating is 40W. That charging block is maxing its output so getting warm is completely normal. It’s very difficult to interpret your definition of “very” warm, however. What’s “very” warm to you may be just warm to me, for example.
Thanks for your reply. I know “very” warm is a subjective description, and without knowing the actual temperature, “very” is open for interpretation. It gets warmer than any other previous charging block I’ve had, but your explanation says why. Makes sense.
