Caps Lock Issue on new Iphone 17 - iOS 26.2

Caps Lock Issue on new Iphone 17 - iOS 26.2

I have seen several threads reporting this same issue, along with the recommended fix of making sure the Enable Caps Lock Switch is ON by navigating to Settings --> General --> Keyboard --> Enable Caps Lock.

Unfortunately this is not working even after powering the phone on and off. I can force capital letters by holding down the Shift key but that is inconvenient and is a problem for letters near the Shift key.

I suspect an iOS bug on some but not all phones and may be visiting the Apple Store where I bought the phone after Christmas. Suggestions invited.

Update: I discovered the problem, which turned out to be trivial. It's necessary to double-tap the Shift soft-key QUICKLY to engage the Caps Lock. I estimate at least 2 taps in a second (2 Hz) is needed - any slower will not engage the Caps Lock. I wasn't tapping quickly enough.

I hope that the good advice given in this thread by the experienced users is helpful to other newbies. Thanks again for your help.

This is what happens when you enable Caps Lock Switch to ON

On iPhone, the Settings → General → Keyboard → Enable Caps Lock option controls whether you can double‑tap the Shift key on the keyboard to lock it in uppercase mode.

Here’s how it works:

  • When enabled:
    • Double‑tap the Shift key (the upward arrow), and it will stay highlighted.
    • All letters you type will remain in uppercase until you tap the Shift key again to turn it off.
    • This is useful if you need to type acronyms, headings, or long strings in ALL CAPS without holding the Shift key for each letter.
  • When disabled:
    • Double‑tapping the Shift key won’t lock it.
    • You’ll only get uppercase letters while holding the Shift key for each character.

In short, it’s a convenience toggle: Enable Caps Lock lets you type in ALL CAPS easily by double‑tapping Shift.

Turning ON Caps Lock:

Double-tapping the up arrow (shift key) on your keyboard, it will lock.

"Caps Lock Issue on new Iphone 17 - iOS 26.2: Unfortunately, as stated in the original post, that does not work either on my Iphone. Enable Caps Lock is ON in Settings --> General --> Keyboard, but double tap does not cause Caps Lock to be ON.: This is actually a minor inconvenience, but it does appear to be a bug at least on my phone."

Thank you or clarifying this.

Getting Double-Tap to Operate:

Aside from reporting it, you might be able to fix this by resetting your iPhone to Factory Settings. Just be certain to take some screenshots of your Home Screen(s) and Settings app, so that you can remember what was laid out and how things were configured, respectively. Export items prior to the Factory Reset. It will take some effort, if you have lots to back up, and want all items to be the same. Elsewise, it's a matter of awaiting a new update release. Go Here: How to Factory Reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

IMPORTANT: Be certain to back up your iPhone to a computer prior performing the Factory Reset. That way, you can have something to restore it from, should anything go wrong in the process of doing so.

Report this Bug to Apple:

Do your Part: Provide Apple with feedback on this, letting them know about this issue.  Apple may not get back to you directly, but the more feedback they receive on this, the more they will know what is occurring, and what bug fixes to include in updates to come. Apple will know nothing of this, if you don't report it to them.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: that this all began after installing an update. Include the URL of this thread
  4. Proceed from there as necessary

Thank you for the detailed response - I do appreciate the quick responses.

I am reluctant to perform a Factory Reset at present. My actual plan is to take the phone (IPhone 17 - not Pro) back to the Apple Store after Christmas (on Friday), where I purchased the phone, and report it to the staff there. The phone is brand new, less than a week old - this issue appears to have existed since I started Messaging. I will perform the backup to PC (Windows 11) as you suggested before going to the store.

One other point: No update was performed, iOS 26.2 is the originally installed OS on this brand new phone. That is another reason why I am reluctant to perform a Factory Reset which may not actually update anything since this is the original OS. If the issue is a small bad sector on the NAND chip (a possibility), OS re-installation will probably reflash the same cells and not fix this minor problem.

You are most welcome. I was not aware that this is a new iPhone.

Getting this Serviced at Apple:

IMPORTANT: Create a back up your iPhone to a computer (Mac or PC) prior to getting this serviced. Be certain to set up a Genius Bar Appointment before taking it to an Apple Store. Go here, and click "Apple Store": https://getsupport.apple.com/locations
