Open Link In New Tab/Window doesn't work in Safari

MacOS 14.8.1

Safari 26.0.1 (19622.1.22.118.4)

Apple Silicon hardware

If I right-click on a link in Safari and choose either "Open Link In New Tab" or "Open Link In New Window", I get an error message saying "This Link Isn't Available". Furthermore, if right-click on the link in Safari and choose "copy link", and then paste that link into a new blank window, it works fine.

This same feature work perfectly fine Chrome. I had been using Safari for maybe 15 years previously with Intel and PPC and this feature always worked.

Like you I have not encountered nor heard of that behavior on any Mac or macOS version ever.

Something isn't right. Read If Safari doesn't work as expected on Mac - Apple Support. Don't omit any steps.

It happens on any link. This feature seems like a brain-dead macro that would be hard to get wrong. If the link itself is right (as evidenced by the fact that I can copy/paste it into a new tab or window that I manually create), then how could the features "copy link in new tab" or "copy link in new window" not work? Just what is Safari doing behind the scenes differently that Google Chrome isn't doing? Presumably Chrome's version of this feature is also a macro which simply copy/pastes the link into a new tab or window that it creates automatically.
