calls that should have been "Silenced" were not

iPhone SE/26.2. I have occasionally received calls from numbers that were NOT in my contact list. I have the phone app set to "Screen Unknown Callers"="Silence"which SHOULD silence calls from callers not in my contact list, no? Usually that is done right, but occasionally those numbers ring. I have carefully searched my contact list for those numbers, and they aren't there. How do these calls manage to get through?

"That's interesting. Thanks. Except the issue here is that I've told my phone not to ring if the incoming call isn't from a number in my contact list. That's a pretty strong block. These calls do ring, and they're not from numbers in my contact list. My phone DOES reject many calls that are not from numbers in my contact list. But, somehow, these few slip through. I'll admit that I quickly delete them and I really should be logging them in order to investigate further."

Report this Phone Call and Other Phone Calls and Messages of the Like:

So, report phone call's and message's content to Apple and others (such as your government). Use my User Tip: Using the Photos App to Report Scams - User Tip

A. Blocking out Scam Calls with Malwarebytes:

I've been using the paid version of Malwarebytes for years --Rings seldom come through that are not on my Contact list, but that's because they are not being blocked. So, I report it to Malwarebytes, and they (the Developer) do some investigation. If found to be scam-related, they block it out for all out there. In essence, I'm helping all out there with Malwarebytes.

B. Blocking Out Messages:

And for the record, an app to use to filter out texts is called Bouncer. It Is a free application found in the App Store --it blocks out texts based on scenarios: keywords and keyphrases. Get it Here: Bouncer: Spam Text Blocker - App Store - Apple

Use Malwarebytes Mobile:

The free version blocks pop ups, whereas the paid version blocks out scammers, and lets you block them out on your own, and even report them. You’ll find it right on the App Store.

Simply never an issue for me. All the calls I don't want to get are spam. If someone really wants to speak to me, they're welcome to leave a voicemail message, which the "Silence" option offers to them. Almost none of the spam callers do that. If I screened my calls, you can bet spammers would say words about why they want to speak to me, allowing them to ring me. "We have a huge investment deal for you! Need to talk!" Ah, c'mon. This question is about why Silence mode sometimes doesn't work. I don't need advice about why I shouldn't be using it. Forum responses to specific questions sometimes degenerate in this way.

I never suggested what you should or shouldn't do. I simply explained what I do. What we can't do is tell you exactly why some calls are getting through.

"Phone app: Scroll to Screen Unknown Callers, then select Never, Ask

Reason for Calling, or Silence. Never means calls from unsaved numbers

ring like any other call; Ask Reason for Calling means these calls are

screened (the caller is asked why they're calling before your phone even

rings); and Silence automatically silences these calls and sends them

to voicemail."

OK. Then I don't know why some are getting through. Perhaps the explanation Rudegar suggested is why.

I avoided this thread because I don't know any other explanation either. Maybe the spammers got smarter.

Perhaps. But this is why I have my calls screened as opposed to completely ignored. If someone really wants to speak with me, they'll identify why and I have the option to answer the call. I wouldn't honestly use the Silence calls feature to the extent the Author of this thread is.

Well, the way you tell someone that you don't know the answer is just to not respond. I'm getting a lot of responses here that have nothing to do with my question. If you take the trouble to tell me what you do, which is different than what I do, and why you like to do it, that's a suggestion. But yes, I accept the fact that I won't get an answer here.

I'm just as welcome to post what I do as you are to ask why something isn't working as you thought it would or should. Now, if I missed the memo that you have purchased the forum, then yes, you can advise me on what I'm allowed to post. But since you of course haven't purchased the forum, I'm not violating the terms of use in any way.
