Apple News not recognizing Vanity Fair subscription on iOS

On my iPad Air and my iPhone SE, on the latest OSs, Apple news app always says "oops there's problem" with signing into my Vanity Fair subscription. It worked for years and suddenly stopped a couple months ago. It handles LATimes subscription fine. I have reset the VF password dozens of times now... works fine on the web site directly. Why won't Apple recognize my 'Already A Subscriber" credentials?
