Does Apple Intelligence & Private Cloud Compute have usage amount limits?

What is the usage limits of Apple Intelligence & Private Cloud Compute? Most AI services including Le Chat, ChatGPT & Gemini have some sort of limits that prevents you from using them too much (unless you pay). However, I use Apple Intelligence & Private Cloud Compute more times than I can count daily to summarize long text (among other things) via an Apple Shortcut I’ve built, and so far I haven’t run into any limits even though I’ve used it very intensely. Is Apple Intelligence & Private Cloud Compute free from daily usage limits? Is this a byproduct of it being private, so Apple can’t even track how much an individual user uses their AI-servers?

Apple Intelligence features generally have no usage limits when using Apple's on-device and Private Cloud Compute models. However, usage of the integrated ChatGPT features (if used) does have a daily limit, after which users are switched to a basic model unless they upgrade to a paid subscription.

Apple's own on-device and Private Cloud Compute models for features like Writing Tools, Image Wand, and call summaries are designed to be used without a specific, visible limit per request and are included with compatible devices at no extra cost. The system is built to be a generous accessibility tool, and most users are unlikely to run into limitations with these core features.

ChatGPT Integration Limits

An internet search suggests the following limits apply...

When using the integrated ChatGPT features through Siri or Writing Tools:

  • Free Tier Limit: There is a daily usage limit for the advanced model, GPT-4. If you exceed this limit, additional requests for the remainder of the 24-hour period automatically revert to a basic version (likely GPT-4 mini). The exact number of requests allowed daily is not publicly specified by Apple.
  • Paid Tier (ChatGPT Plus): If you have a paid ChatGPT Plus account, you can sign in within the settings to use the advanced capabilities more often without being subject to the free daily limit.

To be clear: it’s not like I use Apple Intelligence & Private Cloud Compute an insane amount, I’m just saying I’ve been able to summarize significantly more texts daily than I’ve ever been allowed to do with other LLM services. Apple Intelligence has therefore been a very generous, free accessibility tool to help me with my dyslexia. Apple is truly the best when it comes to accessibility!
